This is a bursary offered by City, University of London, aimed at supporting undergraduate students in financial hardship.
The City Education Grant is intended to provide additional financial support to new full-time undergraduates from the very lowest household incomes who are ordinarily resident in England.
Eligibility criteria
- Ordinarily resident in England
- New full-time entrant to City starting your first year in 2021/22
- Not already been awarded a degree
- Household income of zero as assessed by Student Finance England (SEF) by 31st October 2021.
Value
The bursary is worth £1,500 per academic year, for a maximum of three years depending on the household income remaining at zero in the proceeding academic years.
How to apply
In order to apply for the City Education Grant you will need to follow these three steps:
- Apply for Student Finance through Student Finance England (SFE)
- Provide your household income to Student Finance England
- Both you and your sponsors/parents/partner/guardians must give consent to share your household income with City, University of London. Your consent must be activated on your Student Finance England account before/on 31st October 2021. For any queries on giving your consent please contact Student Finance England directly on 0300 100 0607.
You must provide your household income to Student Finance England and your consent to share your household income with City, University of London by 31th October 2021, otherwise you will not be considered for a grant for the full duration of your undergraduate course at City.
Notification and payment
Eligible students will be contacted during January 2022 by their City email address. Payments will be made in two equal instalments in January and April each year. Students must remain enrolled throughout the academic year to retain the grant.
Terms and conditions
The following terms and conditions relate to 2021/22 entry only:
- Students must meet the eligibility criteria set for the City Education Grant as follows:
- Ordinarily resident in England
- New full-time entrants to City starting their first year in 2021/22
- Not already been awarded a degree
- Household income of zero as assessed by Student Finance England (SFE) by 31st October 2021.
- Eligible students must be registered at City by 31st October 2021. Both student and sponsor (if applicable) must give consent to share their household income information with City, University of London by 31st October 2021 via Student Finance England (SFE). Students’ financial information shared from 1st November 2021 onwards will not be accepted and the student will not be considered for a City Education Grant for the full duration of their undergraduate course; this includes transferring to a new undergraduate course at City
- Students must be new entrants to City and have not already been awarded a degree
- Students must be starting the first year of their degree as a new student (i.e. those starting in Year 2, Year 3 and Year 4 are not eligible)
- The grant is available to undergraduate students who are ordinarily resident in England. Students who normally live in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland are not eligible
- Students whose tuition fee statuses are reassessed in the middle of their degree or who restart a degree will not be eligible
- Students can only receive one of the following awards: City Education Grant, City Cares Award or Sanctuary Scholarship
- Where students’ enrolment statuses change from full-time enrolled to dormant, suspended or withdrawn the next instalment of the grant will be cancelled and any payment already received may need to be repaid by the student to City
- The grant is payable for a maximum of three years and will be paid in two instalments in January and April each academic year. Students must remain eligible to receive the grant during 2021/22 and during each subsequent academic year. Students must be enrolled full-time to receive the grant in 2021/22 and each subsequent year. Students’ household data must be shared with City by 31st October in each subsequent academic year. The student household income as assessed by Student Finance England (SFE) must remain as zero to retain eligibility
- The grant will not be paid during part-time or full-time repeat academic years, dormant/suspended periods, during a placement year or study aboard yea
- The following categories of students are not eligible:
- Students directly continuing from one course to another (for example, from a foundation degree or HND on to the final year of an honours degree)
- Students transferring in from another institution
- Students undertaking a postgraduate qualification or short courses
- Part-time students studying at less than 25 per cent intensity of the full-time equivalent course.
