The integrated MEng degree offers the most direct route to achieving Chartered Engineer professional registration. Our degrees are accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology and the Institute of Measurement and Control.

Mathematics I (20 credits)
This module is intended to support the teaching of engineering modules throughout the programme and to enhance your analytical skills.
Engineering Science (20 credits)
Provides knowledge and understanding of the fundamental aspects of physical sciences which underpin engineering.
Fluid Mechanics & Thermodynamics I (20 credits)
Fundamentals of fluid mechanics and thermodynamics, which are essential for all engineering disciplines.
Solid Mechanics (20 credits)
This module provides an understanding of stress and deformation due to external loads is essential to the design of the structural elements of engineering systems.
Electronics (20 credits)
Introduction to the fundamental concepts, principles and analysis techniques of electrical circuits to enable higher level study on analogue and digital electronics.
Design I (20 credits)
Introduction to the skills, processes and methods required and to develop your understanding through design projects, which include designing, building and testing.
Personal & Professional Development (5 credits)
You will be set a number of tasks and activities around your main programme of study, which will be monitored, evaluated and discussed with you by you

Mathematics II (20 credits)
A continuation and expansion of Mathematics 1 and also introduces numerical techniques through the use of MATLAB.
Computer Science and Programming (20 credits)
Introduction to the basic principles of computer programming design, and enables you to gain skills and knowledge in computer programming by completing a substantial computer programming design assignment.
Electromagnetic Fields and Circuits (20 credits)
Learn the principles of electromagnetics and CAD, construction, analysis and performance of analogue electronic circuits. Electromagnetic fields will also be introduced.
Mechatronics (20 credits)
This module emphasises an integrated approach to the design of these systems based on elements of Mechanical, Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Measurement and Data Analysis (20 credits)
Learn the principles of sensing, measurement, signal conditioning, and statistical analysis of measurement data.
Digital Design (20 credits)
Through at least two design projects, you will develop your design and team-working skills, and obtain new skills in the design and manufacturing of electronic circuits, and in prototype design.
Deepen your expertise with modules in signal processing and communications, system modelling and control, power engineering and more. Complete an independent and group design project to showcase your skills.
Signal Processing and Communications (20 credits)
This module will provide you with the knowledge and understanding of signal processing techniques and methods and teach you how to apply this knowledge in developing modern communication systems.
Systems Modelling and Control (20 credits)
Introduction to the fundamental theory of control system design for continuous-time and discrete-time dynamical systems using frequency-domain and state-space methods.
Power Engineering (20 credits)
Gain and understanding of electrical power generation; study the components used in such systems, and their necessity for the delivery of high power to high voltage loads.
MEng Individual Project (Stage 3) (20 credits)
This module provides an opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills acquired from other parts of the programme to a major piece of individual work on a topic in engineering.
Engineering Management (20 credits)
Learn and develop essential management and business skills.
Design III: Electrical and Electronic Engineering (20 credits)
Work on an Embedded Systems project; develop an electromechanical device (a robot). Combine design skills with knowledge in embedded and real time systems, electronics, mechatronics and computer programming.
Transition from academic study to professional practice with a major individual research project, plus group design exercises and modules covering advanced structural analysis and heat transfer, and advanced computational fluid dynamics.
Advanced Signal Processing and Communications (20 credits)
This module will introduce you to the advanced concepts of signal processing and telecommunications.
Microelectronic Circuits and Devices (20 credits)
This module focuses on advanced electronic and microelectronic design with emphasis on specialised circuit structures, microchip architecture and fabrication techniques.
Robotics, Imaging and Vision (20 credits)
In this module you will learn advanced principles of modern computing systems and the scientific and practical aspects of modern robotics.
Design IV: Electrical and Electronic Engineering (40 credits)
Building upon the knowledge you have gathered across the four years of your programme; understand how various technical and management techniques can be combined to successfully complete a substantial Engineering design project.
MEng Individual Project (Stage 4) (20 credits)
The research project provides you with an opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills acquired during the Stage 3 Individual Project to investigate your chosen area of interest in greater depth.
If you wish to gain practical experience during your degree, then you have the option of spending 12 months, between either years 2 and 3 or years 3 and 4, on a paid industrial placement. We strongly recommend this.

Teaching and assessment
Learning involves lectures, tutorials, laboratory classes and group design exercises.
You will learn from a combination of theoretical, experimental and computational study. We encourage critical thinking and foster curiosity through both teamwork and independent study.
Staff are research-active, at the cutting-edge of their field and up-to-date with the latest industrial developments in their subject areas.
Grades obtained in each year count towards the final degree classification, with increasing weight given to the later years.
Feedback will normally be provided within three weeks of the submission deadline or assessment date. For end-of-module examinations feedback will normally be provided within four weeks, while feedback for final year projects or dissertations, may be longer.
Assessment is weighted towards coursework, and coursework assignments are submitted weekly. Coursework is usually worth between 60 and 75 per cent of the overall module, and the examination worth 25 per cent, although this varies across modules.

The balance of assessment by examination, practical examination and assessment by coursework will to some extent depend on the optional modules you choose.

Most contact hours will take the form of lectures, interactive sessions, practical workshops and small group classes, supported by a personal tutorial system. The number will decrease as you progress and you become more able to direct your own learning.

The School has its own dedicated placements team that provides on-hand placement and internship support and guidance for students throughout their studies.
Our team of placement specialists, the Professional Liaison Unit, has extensive experience in helping students to secure professional experience across a range of industries. The team also has longstanding relationships with an impressive and diverse range of companies spanning both large and small organisations.
You can undertake a summer internship at the end of each academic year or opt to spend a year on an industry placement at the end of your second or third year.
MEng students are strongly encouraged to do this and our specialist advisors within the School are in regular contact with companies to assist students in finding suitable work experience. Students are paid while on placement and are visited by their personal tutor during this time.
Placements are paid, and are a fantastic way to gain professional experience in a relevant field as part of your degree. Undertaking a placement year could also count towards the experience requirement for a professional engineering qualification.
Placements are highly encouraged at City. Students that complete a placement year benefit from gaining professional experience working on real-life projects and are also more likely to achieve higher grades, secure a graduate-level job and earn a higher salary.
Following placement, students more fully appreciate the context and relevance of their university studies and gain a greater understanding of the industry they are about to join. This valuable experience allows students to take on graduate-level responsibilities, often while working within a multidisciplinary team.

Applications for degree courses must be made through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS).
You can apply through your school or college using the Apply system, which enables you to submit your application directly to the UCAS website.
