Course content

Gain expertise in crucial aspects of aerospace engineering, encompassing the structural integrity of air and spacecraft, propulsion systems, control mechanisms, and manufacturing processes. Emphasis is placed on sustainable life-cycle engineering throughout your education.

Embedded within our curriculum is "The Engineer in Society," an innovative thematic approach woven into every academic year. This component acquaints you with the multifaceted context – economic, social, and technical – where engineers operate. Foundation

The foundation year consists of one compulsory module worth 120 credits consisting of the following components: Mathematics, Mechanics, Physics, Computing and IT and Communication and Study Skills.

Year 1

Our shared engineering first year allows you to build a foundation in mathematics, engineering, physics, and computing.

The Engineer in Society - Social responsibility (15 credits)

The aims of the Engineer in Society programme are to introduce students to the economic, social, technical and managerial context within which engineers work, to seek to provide a sense of the 'bigger picture', including that within which engineering, and engineering- related organisations operate, enhance employability, communications and teamwork skills and to see engineering in the business context in which students will build successful careers.
Engineering Design 1 (15 credits)

Design is one of the core activities that professional engineers undertake and it is at the heart of all engineering programmes in the School. Designers use a range of skills and methods that are quite similar in the different engineering disciplines.
Introduction to Mechanics of materials and manufacturing (15 credits)

Mechanics of Materials is one of the fundamental subjects required for engineering courses. An understanding of stress and deformation due to external loads is essential to the design of the structural elements of engineering systems. This module provides a basic understanding of methods by which these may be determined.
Electronics - including circuits, digital and analog electronics (15 credits)

The aim of this module is to provide you with a broad introduction to the fundamental concepts, principles and analysis techniques of electrical circuits to enable higher level study on analogue and digital electronics. The module will concentrate on the fundamentals of electrical direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) circuits, amplifier-level analogue electronics as well as digital logic, taught at a functional level.
Introduction to programming (15 credits)

This module is intended to support the teaching of engineering modules throughout the programme by introducing you to the use of a computing language (Python).
Engineering Science (15 credits)

The primary aim of this module is to provide you with knowledge and understanding of the fundamental aspects of physical sciences which underpin engineering.
Mathematics 1 (15 credits)

Mathematics is one of the fundamental tools of the engineer. It underpins every branch of engineering and the calculations involved are needed to apply almost every engineering skill. The student is introduced to a range of basic mathematical tools which are required and developed in later modules.
Introduction to Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics (15 credits)

This module brings together fundamentals of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics. Thermodynamics treats the various phenomena of energy and related properties of matter.

Year 2

Take modules including composite material design, fundamentals of structural stability and air flow behaviour. Understand how aeronautics and aerospace engineering fits in the circular economy.

The Engineer in Society: Sustainability and Circular Economy (15 credits)

This module introduces students to the economic, social, technical, sustainability and managerial context within which engineers work, to seek to provide a sense of the 'bigger picture', including that within which engineering and engineering-related organisations operate, enhance employability, communications and teamwork skills.
Mathematics 2 (15 credits)

The aims of the module are to: further support the teaching of engineering modules which have a strong analytical content; further enhance your analytical and modelling skills; support your understanding of advanced analytical concepts which are important in engineering.
Engineering Design 2 (15 credits)

This module is designed to equip aeronautical engineers with the basic concepts of air vehicle performance and how these are inverted to drive the conceptual design of an air vehicle.
Fluid Mechanics (15 credits)

Fluid Mechanics is an essential part in engineering for sustainable transport and energy conversion and can be studied in many natural processes such as locomotion in air and water.
Structures and Materials (15 credits)

The module aims to provide you with an insight into and understanding of structural performance introduced by the selection of materials and properties, and their analysis methods as applied to the structural design.
Thermodynamics (15 credits)

The aims of this module are to develop knowledge and critical understanding of the first and the second law of thermodynamics, and of the way in which those laws have developed and the ability to apply underlying concepts and principles in the relevant individual research projects in stage 3 and solving real engineering problems in future employment.
Mechatronics and Systems (15 credits)

Mechatronics is combination of mechanical, electrical engineering, computer science, and information technology. In this module you will learn the fundamental aspects of mechatronics systems: Electro-mechanical Systems modelling and analysis, sensors, actuation, real-time computer interfacing, and the basics of automated solutions via Computer Control.
Data Analysis for Engineers (15 credits)

The module aims to provide students with sufficient tools and techniques to explore small and large datasets, to perform data analysis and to use key insights from statistics and machine learning. The main topics include the basics of data analysis, statistics, and modern data science.

Year 3

Deepen your expertise with applied modules in analysis and design of typical aircraft, sustainable manufacturing and achieving zero-emission flight of the future. Learn about wind tunnel flows and complete an aerospace engineering project.

Individual project (30 credits)

It is essential that professional engineers must possess the ability to apply their knowledge and understanding of engineering fundamentals to the solution of engineering problems. In problem solving, professional engineers must demonstrate individual motivation and initiative, and the powers of critical analysis, creativity and innovation.
The Engineer in Society - Zero Emissions (15 credits)

The aims of the Engineer in Society programme are to introduce students to the economic, social, technical and managerial context within which engineers work, to seek to provide a sense of the 'bigger picture', including that within which engineering and engineering-related organisations operate, enhance employability, communications and teamwork skills and to see engineering in the business context in which students will build successful careers.
Composite Analysis and Manufacturing (15 credits)

The module aims to provide the student with an insight into and understanding of composite materials and their manufacturing as applied to the design of modern structures; also, to introduce the basic methods and practices including the finite element technique used in structural design by taking into account of advanced composite structures.
Aerospace Propulsion (15 credits)

This module deals with propulsion for manned and unmanned aircraft, rockets and spacecraft. You will be introduced to the different types of propulsion systems for aircraft and spacecraft, and you will learn to identify the most suitable option based on the flight/mission requirements.
Gas Dynamics (15 credits)

Compressible flow refers to flow at velocities that are comparable to, or exceed, the speed of sound. The compressibility is relevant because at such velocities the variations in density that occur as the fluid moves from place to place cannot be ignored.
Flight Mechanics and Control (15 credits)

This module aims to cover various control systems for conventional aircraft. All flight vehicles are fundamentally dynamic systems. An understanding of the basic principles of stability and control of dynamical systems in general and specifically for aircraft is an essential requirement for aeronautical engineers.
Structural Analysis and Finite Element Method (15 credits)

The module introduces students to the Finite Element Method (FEM), widely used in mechanical, aerospace and automotive industries for structural analysis and design. While the module offers the opportunity for you to learn theoretical and practical aspects of finite element analysis, it also enables students to gain hands-on experience with industry-relevant finite element software tools for solving structural analysis and design problems.

Aeronautics courses benefit from recently redeveloped facilities with modern teaching lecture theatres equipped with the latest interactive AV systems.
The A320 cockpit flight simulator is a dynamic virtual learning environment, that provides more procedure trainer information and enhancing safety and efficiency to our student pilots and engineers.
City's Merlin MP520 simulator is fitted with a two-axis motion system and closed cockpit design for greater immersion and is used in the theory and study of aerodynamics and the mechanics of flight.
Our Engineering labs are equipped with state-of-the-art wind tunnels and test equipment.
This is a one-of-a-kind low-turbulence wind tunnel used for the study of laminar flows. Part of the National Wind Tunnel Facility.
