Course overview
Immersing yourself is a great way to speed up your learning – especially if you know a bit of Russian already. We’ll explore different scenarios, whether that’s inviting someone to a restaurant or using plural and singular of nouns correctly.
By the end of the course, you’ll be communicating at CEFR A1 level of the Common European Framework of language learning. You’ll also be prepared for our Russian Lower Intermediate (Year 2) syllabus, which starts in September.

Timetable
We’ve divided our Russian Beginners syllabus into three parts. If you’ve already completed part 1 or studied Russian for around 20 hours, this is an opportunity to complete your beginners learning. Find out more in our eligibility section.
Over just one term, you’ll complete two modules (parts 2 and 3). From April/May through to July, we’ll hold two-hour lessons twice a week meaning you’ll complete 40 hours of learning in total.

What will I learn?
On this part 2 and 3 combined course, you’ll focus on developing your Russian listening and speaking skills. We’ll help you expand your vocabulary and become more confident dealing with common scenarios.
By the end of this course, you’ll be able to
- talk about your leisure time
- count higher numbers
- describe yourself and your family
- describe rooms in the house
- talk about your hometown
- count ordinal numbers
- invite someone to a restaurant
- discuss likes and dislikes.
We’ll teach you grammatical structures including:
- adjectives
- accusative case
- present tense of the verb говорить
- short form of adjectives (“going out”)
- genitive plural of masculine nouns
- plural and singular of nouns
- dative singular of nouns
- consolidation of conjugation of verbs in present tense
- the verb “to go”
- reflexive verbs
- prepositions
- instrumental singular of nouns
- nouns in dative, instrumental and prepositional plural
- declension of personal pronouns
- adjectives in the accusative singular
- the use of dative to express age
- consolidation of reflexive nouns
- the perfective and imperfective aspect of the verbs.
Assessment and certificates
Want proof of your learning? If you attend 70 per cent of classes, we’ll award you an official City, University of London certificate. While it’s not formally accredited, you’ll be able to show it to potential employers.
Teaching
Our tutors design sessions that are fun and interactive. You’ll learn through a variety of activities that test your knowledge, including:
- classroom discussion
- pair and group work
- role-play
- grammar in context
- pronunciation and intonation.
We’ll also set weekly homework so you can practise what you have learnt in class in your free time.
Eligibility
Studied Russian for around 20 hours? Already know the basics? It’s the right level if you can:
- introduce yourself and talk about your family
- recognise letters from the Cyrillic alphabet and understand their pronunciation
- use numbers
- ask for and tell the time
- ask for directions
- book into a hotel
- describe things
- understand some basic grammar including masculine, neuter and feminine nouns
- understand the basic rules of the past tense.
