Russian Beginners Part 2 Course overview
If you’re already familiar with the Russian alphabet and can make a few simple sentences, part 2 will continue to build your beginners knowledge of Russian.
In part 2, you’ll expand your vocabulary to include ordering food at a restaurant and shopping for souvenirs. You’ll become familiar with new forms of Russian grammar, including adjectives, and plural and singular nouns.
These classes are taught in small groups and led by a qualified and native Russian tutor, allowing you to progress quickly over just 10 weeks.
Who is it for?
You should have studied some Russian before (approximately 20 hours of formal learning). If you have completed part 1,this is the perfect next step. See our eligibility section for more details.

Timetable
This course takes place one evening a week at 18:30 for 10 weeks.

What will I learn?
Part 2 focuses on the language you need in daily life, with an emphasis on listening and speaking. That includes ordering food, talking about countries and languages and shopping for souvenirs.
By the end of this course, you will be able to
- talk about your leisure time
- count higher numbers
- invite someone to a restaurant
- discuss likes and dislikes.

- adjectives
- accusative case
- present tense of the verb говорить
- short form of adjectives (“going out”)
- genitive plural of masculine nouns
- plural and singular of nouns
- dative singular of nouns
- consolidation of conjugation of verbs in present tense
- the verb “to go”
- reflexive verbs
- prepositions.
Assessment and certificates
You will be awarded an official City, University of London certificate on completion of the course if you attend over 70 per cent of the classes. The course is not formally accredited.
Teaching
Our activities – including classroom discussion, group work and role-play – are fun and interactive.
You’ll learn about grammar in context as well as pronunciation and intonation. You will also be given weekly homework to practise what you have learned in class.
Eligibility
You should have already studied for around 20 hours and know the very basics.
It’s the right level if you can:
- introduce yourself and talk about your family
- recognise letters from the Cyrillic alphabet and understand their pronunciation
- use numbers, ask for and tell the time
- ask for directions and book into a hotel
- describe things.
understand some basic grammar including masculine, neuter and feminine nouns, and the basic rules of the past tense.
