Course overview
Know how to introduce yourself? Able to pronounce the alphabet? Understand feminine and masculine nouns? Improve your conversations quickly with our combined course.
Every session you practise speaking, reading and listening with the help of your qualified languages tutor. One evening you might learn to describe events, the next you might be learning how to use direct object pronouns.
After 10 weeks of intense learning, you’ll be communicating at A1 level of the Common European Framework for language learning (CEFR).
Who is it for?
You will need to know a little bit of Portuguese to start here. You might have completed part 1 or studied for around 20 hours. Find out more in our eligibility section.

Timetable
You’ll complete two modules (parts 2 and 3) in one term starting in April/May. We’ll run two two-hour sessions a week, over 10 weeks. In total, you’ll complete 40 hours of learning.

What will I learn?
For this combined course, we focus on Brazilian Portuguese. However, there might be some references to European Portuguese. Your tutor will teach you how to ask questions, describe objects, create conversations, and more.
By the end of this course, you’ll be able to:
- express preference, desire, doubt, happiness, unhappiness
- give and understand directions
- make complaints
- describe objects
- make comparisons
- say where things are
- describe past activities
- talk about the daily routine
- describe people
- express taste, likes and dislikes, worries
- talk about health
- give and defend an opinion
- offer help and give advice.
We’ll teach you grammatical structures including:
- regular verbs -ir, fazer, preferir
- past simple of regular -ar/-er/-ir, ser, estar, ir, ter, fazer, querer, poder, dar
- possessive pronouns dele/a
- comparatives
- prepositions of place, prepositions of time
- direct object pronouns
- verbs ver, ter que, precisar, por, vir, vestir X vestir-se
- past imperfect, routine in the past, description in the past, simultaneous actions in the past, background action
- future
- conditional.
Assessment and certificates
Attended 70 per cent of classes? We’ll award you an official certificate from City, University of London. It’s not formally accredited, but it’s still a brilliant addition to your CV and an interesting talking point for interviews.
Teaching
We use a range of classroom activities to help you learn. During this evening course, you can expect:
- pair, group work and roleplay
- classroom discussion
- pronunciation and intonation
- grammar in context.
Your tutors will also set weekly homework for you to complete in your free time. This is key to help you keep up with the fast-paced nature of the course.
Eligibility
Already studied Portuguese for 20 hours and know the basics? This course will be the perfect fit for you. Before enrolling on this course, you should be able to:
- introduce yourself and talk about your family, use numbers, ask for and tell the time
- use the Portuguese alphabet with good pronunciation
- understand feminine and masculine nouns
- use regular verbs including ser, ir, poder, estar and querer.

English requirements
You will need a good level of spoken and written English to enrol on this course.
