Our Music Business: Records, Publishing and Finance short course provides a comprehensive introduction to the music industry business.
It gives an overview of how record companies operate, including the role and responsibilities of the artiste and repertoire team, as well as budget management and understanding the UK music market.
All aspects of music publishing are thoroughly covered on the programme. You will be encouraged to bring in a favoured piece of music to stimulate a group discussion.
One of the classes will be taught by a guest lecturer -a successful record producer - giving further practical insight and knowledge into the music industry.

Timetable
The Music Business short course takes place every Tuesday at 18.30 for 10 weeks.
City Short Courses follow the academic year, delivering courses over three terms. These include:

What will I learn?
Throughout the 10-weeks you will learn to:
- Map the role of artiste and repertoire within the record and music publishing industries
- Identify the key functions and responsibilities of the artiste and repertoire team
- Understand the anatomy of a hit song
- Prepare budgets for recording sessions
- Understand the process of recording
- Identify the main characteristics of particular music markets in the UK.
There will be comprehensive coverage throughout the course on the various Collection Societies, for example, MCPS, PRS, and PPL, who manage the legal rights to music and forms of royalties for writers and performers.
You will explore Major and Indie labels in detail and examine the practicalities and costs of music tours, such as promotion, merchandise and interviews.
There will be visits from two guest lecturers during the course, to cover various technical subjects.
Assessment and certificates
Your tutor will issue printed handouts of budgets and other relevant information to be discussed. Materials are used to identify certain royalty rates and other figures discussed.
A guest speaker will be available to talk about finance or producing. Sometimes there will be a visit to a recording studio, if one is available.
There is no formal assessment and you are not given any formal qualifications on completion of the course. However, if you attend 70 percent of the classes you will be awarded an official City, University of London certificate.
Eligibility
There are no eligibility requirements to attend the Music Business course, only a genuine interest in the music industry.
English requirements
You will need a good level of spoken and written English to enrol on this course.
