Japanese Beyond Beginners Part 3 Course overview
In part 3, you’ll improve your vocabulary needed for travelling so you can get the most out of a trip to Japan. You’ll be able to make simple sentences, answer questions about yourself, and learn to express wishes and opinions.
You’ll begin to understand the difference between direct and reported speech, and you’ll start using conditional expression. You’ll also continue to build your knowledge of kanji, as another 30 new characters will be introduced.
More elements of Japan’s fascinating culture will be explored while you learn.
On completing this final module, you will be working at the level N5 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test, giving you the confidence to not only get by in Japan, but to also explore the country and enjoy meeting new people.

Timetable
This course takes place one evening a week at 19:00 for 10 weeks.

Assessment and certificates
You will be awarded an official City, University of London certificate on completion of the course if you attend over 70 per cent of the classes. The course is not formally accredited.
Assessment
There is no formal assessment but you will be expected to complete assignments to evaluate your progress.
Teaching
You’ll learn the vocabulary and grammar needed for a range of real-world scenarios and have plenty of time to practice your pronunciation. Weekly homework will be set to improve your understanding.
You’ll work on your listening skills, through conversation, film and TV clips. These are played at natural speed, to help you prepare for interactions with native speakers.
You’ll also work on your reading and writing skills, learning new kanji.
Our digital platform, Moodle, hosts lesson content and additional study materials to help you progress.
Eligibility
It is the right level if you have either:
- completed our part 2 of our Beyond Beginners syllabus
- studied formally for 100 hours.
You should already be able to:
- write and read Hiragana and Katakana
- talk about weekend plans and travel arrangements
- ask permission to do something at someone's house
- express ability or possibility
- describe what you have experienced in the past.
