Learn Japanese Beginners Part 3

In Part 3, you’ll develop vocabulary to help you find your way around town, including asking directions, taking transport and talking about your hometown.

You’ll take a closer look at Japanese culture, including Japanese celebrations, festivals and museums. You will also start to read and write very basic Kanji.

Led by a native and qualified Japanese tutor, you will improve and perfect your skills through a combination of group work, activities and exercises.

This is the third of three beginners modules, taught at progressive levels, leaving you free to join our Beyond Beginners syllabus in October and work towards Japanese-Language Proficiency Test N5 (JLPT N5).

Who is it for?

You have studied beginners Japanese for around 40 hours. If you have finished our part 2 course, or you have equivalent knowledge, this is the ideal next step. See the eligibility section to find out more.

This course takes place one evening a week for 10 weeks.

Topics covered

• communication in context: getting about in a city, asking for direction, transport, talking about your area
• likes and dislikes, expressing wishes and intentions
• Japanese culture in context: festivals and museums
• introduction to some very basic Kanji.

Grammatical structures

• modal verbs: te form + mo iidesu ka
• present continuous: te form + imasu
• “to want” + infinitive: watashi wa verb -tai desu.

You will be awarded an official City, University of London certificate on completion of the course if you attend over 70 per cent of the classes. The course is not formally accredited or assessed.

Assessment

Any assessment will be informal to help you evaluate your progress.

Teaching

Classroom activities during this evening course will include:

• pronunciation and intonation
• pair, group work and role-play
• classroom discussion
• grammar in context.

Our tutors will set weekly homework to help you practise what you have learned in class.

This course is the right level for you if you studied for approximately 40 hours, or if you can:

• use basic greetings when visiting people and receiving guests
• give compliments and express gratitude
• praise someone's possessions and talk about your own
• make a telephone call and talk about schedules in detail
• understand how to read and write some Hiragana and Katakana.
