French Upper Intermediate Part 2 Course overview
In part 2, you’ll be required to explain and justify your choices by participate in discussions and debates You’ll use a wide variety of grammar, including the conditional and past conditional, the subjunctive present, impersonal forms; and passive sentences.
You’ll learn vocabulary and grammar needed for a wide range of real-world scenarios, including detailed discussions about your health and the environment.
This 10-week course is the second of three modules taught at progressive levels and working towards CEFR B2 level.
Who is it for?
This course is for you if you are already communicating at CEFR B1 level or have approximately 200 hours of formal learning. You may have completed part 1 of the course or have a French A-level. Find more information in the eligibility section.

Assessment and certificates
You will be awarded an official City, University of London certificate on completion of the course. You must attend over 70 per cent of the classes to be eligible for the certificate.
There is no formal assessment, but you will be given weekly exercises to complete at home.
Your tutor will monitor your progress throughout the course and assess your performance giving a short presentation, held at the end of term.
Teaching
This course focuses on developing oral, reading and written fluency. Small group sizes allow for greater practice and participation in class activities.
At this level we use more complicated learning material including reading and discussing French newspaper articles and watching videos. French literature is also used, giving you a more rounded insight into French culture.
Eligibility
It is the right level if you:
- have completed part 1 of the upper intermediate course, or equivalent course elsewhere
- can confidently communicate at B1 level, according to the Common European Framework of languages
- have French A-level qualification
- have studied French formally for approximately 200 hours.
You should already know:
- how to discern formal and informal language with the use of relative clauses
- how to give a short presentation on a topic of your choice
- how to talk about the future and make hypotheses
- about more complex interrogative structures.
English requirements
You will need a good level of spoken and written English to enrol on this course.
