Know how to make simple sentences in present tense? Good at identifying some masculine and feminine objects? If you can confidently answer yes, skip the basics and join us for this combined course.
We’ll help you with all aspects of conversation, from making reservations to writing emails. You’ll also learn about regular verbs ending in -ir and -re in the present tense and start exploring the past tense.
To continue your learning, join us in September for French Beyond Beginners (Year 2) and start working towards CEFR A1/2 level of the Common European Framework for Languages.
Who is it for?
Like all our beginner language courses, French is divided into three parts. This course will suit you if you joined us for part 1. However, it’s also a good fit for anyone who has studied French for around 20 hours. For more information, see our eligibility section.

Timetable
Starting in April/May, you’ll work through two modules (part 2 and 3) over one term. You’ll take part in two two-hour sessions a week, over 10 weeks. That’s 40 hours of fast-tracked learning in total.

What will I learn?
We help you develop the listening and speaking skills you need for authentic situations, whether you need to arrange travel and accommodation or explain a medical issue to a doctor.
By the end of this combined course, you’ll be able to
- book various services such as hotel, tours, car, restaurant, and transport
- shop confidently
- express likes and dislikes
- express the near future, le future proche
- use essential verbs such as vouloir, pouvoir, devoir, savoir
- use pronominal verbs, adjectives and some prepositions
- give advice and express opinions
- talk about past actions
- express obligation and interdiction
- make complaints
- express nuances.
We’ll teach you grammatical structures including
- present of modal verbs vouloir, pouvoir, devoir, savoir
- present tense of verbs ending in -ir and -re
- pronominal verbs or reflexive verbs se laver, s’habiller, se preparer
- direct and indirect pronouns le, la, l’, les and lui, leur
- further key words pourquoi, avec qui, depuis quand
- introduction to the perfect tense, passé composé
- consolidation of adjectives and their agreement
- further comparatives
- location or place adverbs
- consolidation of the present tense
- consolidation of perfect tense
- introduction of the perfect tense for the reflexive verbs
- introduction to the regular future tense
- basic relative clauses using qui and que
- complete review of the past tense
- more pronouns such as moi, toi, …eux
- stock phrases j'en ai; j’en voudrais cinq, j'y vais…
- adverbs of quantities.
Assessment and certificates
Teaching
To help you learn French quickly, our tutors set a range of tasks for you to complete in small groups. Sessions will include:
- role-play
- classroom discussion
- pair and group work
- pronunciation and intonation
- grammar in context.
Assessment
In your spare time, we’ll also expect you to complete weekly homework to get to grips with what you have learnt in class.
Certificate
Take part in 70 per cent of classes and we’ll award you an official City, University of London certificate. While this course isn’t formally accredited, employers will recognise your commitment to learning a new language.
Eligibility
You’ll need to already have some basic understanding of French (approximately 20 hours of study). This course is the right level if you can:
- introduce yourself and briefly describe someone
- talk about your family and your profession
- tell the time and have some knowledge of numbers
- understand use of -er verbs in present
- understand some prepositions such as “in", “under”, “next to”
- use masculine and feminine forms.
