French Lower Intermediate Part 1 Course overview
In part 1, you’ll learn to describe relationships and express emotions. You’ll learn new vocabulary to discuss TV and social media, allowing you to converse with French speakers on contemporary subjects.
You’ll revise grammar structures, including the past tense and consolidate your understanding of direct and indirect pronouns. Additional grammar includes expressions of time and their tenses, as well as comparatives and superlatives.
You’ll also broaden your understanding of the French culture by reading French newspapers to add a wider dimension to your learning.

This course takes place one evening a week at 18:30 for 10 weeks.

What will I learn?

Grammatical structures
- perfect the past tense with ‘to have’, ‘to be’ and with reflective verbs
- consolidation of direct and indirect pronouns; y and en pronouns
- comparatives and superlatives
- adjectives to express emotions
- expressions of time and their tenses
- imperfect tense.
Assessment and certificates
You will be awarded an official City, University of London certificate on completion of the course. You must attend over 70 per cent of the classes to be eligible for the certificate.
There is no formal assessment but there is weekly homework of comprehensive grammar exercises and reading texts, and it’s important you complete this to keep improving.
Although there isn’t an exam, your tutor will monitor and assess your progress throughout the course, via your performance during the lesson and the homework you submit.
Teaching
In class you will use activities, such as role play and small group exercises to focus on all four key skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing. With a focus on speaking, you’ll have plenty of time to apply the language in real-world scenarios.
You’ll receive lesson content in advance, giving you the chance to practice your pronunciation – this leaves more time in class to apply what you’ve learnt.
Eligibility
It is the right level if you:
- have completed our full French Beyond Beginners course, or equivalent course elsewhere
- have a good or recent GCSE
- can communicate confidently at A1/A2 level, according to the Common European Framework of languages
- have studied French for around 120 hours.
You should already:
- be confident with pronunciation and intonation
- know how to use adjectives, superlatives and comparatives
- are comfortable ordering food, giving instructions and asking for details
- be able to talk about events in the past, present and future.
English requirements
You will need a good level of spoken and written English to enrol on this course.
