French Beginners Part 3 Course overview
If you’ve started learning French and want to continue, part 3 of our engaging and enjoyable French Beginners course can help you do just that.
In part 3, you’ll learn to give and understand directions, express an opinion and make a complaint. You will build and expand your knowledge of verbs in the present and the perfect tense (passé compose) and practise using these in an everyday context. You’ll also be introduced to reflexive verbs in the perfect tense.
Alongside your tutor’s presentations, you’ll participate in a range of activities, exercises and group work, building confidence to interact with others in French.

Timetable
This course takes place for one evening every week at 18:30 for 10 weeks.

What will I learn?
By the end of this course, you will be able to:

Grammar
- consolidation of the present tense
- consolidation of perfect tense
- introduction of the perfect tense for the reflexive verbs
- introduction to the regular future tense
- basic relative clauses using qui and que
- complete review of the past tense
- more pronouns such as moi, toi, eux
- stock phrases: J'en ai; j’en voudrais cinq, j'y vais
- adverbs of quantities.
Assessment and certificates
You will be awarded an official City, University of London certificate on completion of the course if you attend over 70 per cent of the classes. The course is not formally accredited.
Teaching
Lessons will cover pronunciation and intonation as well as grammar in context. Classroom activities during this evening course will include role-play, classroom discussion, pair and group work.
Your tutor will give you homework for you to practise what you have learned in class.
Eligibility
You’ll need some basic knowledge of French to enrol on this module (40 hours of formal learning).
It is the right level for you if you can:
- talk about your daily activities
- order in a café
- say what you like or dislike
- use regular verbs in present tense (-er, -ir and -re)
- use common irregular verbs in the present tense
- understand a little of the perfect tense (passé compose), but not necessarily have experience in using it
- use the imperative, possessive pronouns and common adverbs of frequency.

English requirements
You will need a good level of spoken and written English to enrol on this course.
