Developing Professional Skills in Ultrasound Course overview
This course develops knowledge of the personal, professional, ethical and legal issues relating to advanced practice in medical ultrasound imaging.
The course content will be flexible to meet the needs of the rapidly changing health care agenda.
You will be expected to work independently and in groups to relate the content of the course to your clinical practice and evaluate the literature in relation to your practice and government/professional body directives and guidelines. The skills developed during this course will help to prepare you for advanced and consultant practice roles in your future career.
Who is it for?
When accessed as a CPD standalone course, this course is for qualified sonographers wishing to develop their understanding of advanced practice.

The course is delivered via online lectures and face-to-face teaching sessions on one day between September and June.

What will I learn?
The course will provide you with knowledge of professional issues related to medical imaging and advanced practice, which are needed to undertake imaging examinations in order to reduce the impact on your own health and provide safe and effective care to clients, within legal and ethical frameworks.

Content will be updated to relate to current guidelines and changes to ultrasound practice.
Assessment and certificates
Teaching
Teaching is delivered via the ‘flipped classroom’ method, with online resources for knowledge acquisition, online lectures, face-to-face tutorials, plenary sessions, and in-class, problem- and scenario-based learning.
Assessment
You will deliver an oral presentation on a topic related to quality provision, service development or developing advanced practice skills within your chosen area. This will be followed by viva questions relating to the course content.

This course is worth 15 credits toward eligible programmes.
Eligibility
Requirements:
- a BSc (hons) 2:1 or above in a relevant health-related subject
- a clinical placement for 3 days per week in a recognised clinical department are needed prior to entry.
For the ultrasound programme, this is a core course for any award. The course can be chosen as a stand-alone CPD course, or can be studied with the Ultrasound Physics and a clinical course to gain credits for a Postgraduate Certificate.
English requirements
If your first language is not English, one of the following is required:
- A first degree from a UK university
- A first degree from an overseas institution recognised by City, University of London as providing adequate evidence of proficiency in the English language, for example, from institutions from Australia, Canada or the United States of America.
- International English Language Test Service (IELTS) a score of 7.0 is required with no subtest below 7.0
- Pearson Test of English (Academic) score 72 required
- TOEFL 100 overall with 24 in Writing, 20 in Listening, 19 Reading and 20 Speaking
- Other evidence of proficiency in the English language, which satisfies the board of studies concerned, including registration with your professional regulator.
