Solicitors’ Practice Programme LLM/PGDip Course overview

    Benefits of this course

The Solicitors’ Practice Programme is designed for those preparing for the new route to qualifying as a solicitor in England and Wales.

Training to be a solicitor is an exciting, yet challenging undertaking. The Law School has been training solicitors for decades, many of whom have gone on to achieve prized positions in the legal world, so you can be assured that we have the ideal programme to help you excel in the SQE.

The programme has been carefully designed in collaboration with leading law firms who have outlined exactly what they seek in newly qualified solicitors.

Over two 10-week terms, you will study the requisite material to successfully pass the SQE 1 and SQE 2 respectively, equivalent to a Postgraduate Diploma.

If you select the Master of Laws (LLM) pathway, this will be followed by an additional 5-week elective term and submission of a legal practice research project to deepen your understanding of an area of legal practice that is of particular interest to you.

    Awards

You can select to apply for one of the available exit points for this course.

    • Master of Laws (LLM)
    • Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip)

    Who is this course for?

This course is for holders of undergraduate law degrees (or non-Law graduates with a GDL) who wish to qualify as Solicitors in England & Wales and who wish to achieve an academic qualification as part of their preparation for the SQE assessments.

You will build on your existing legal knowledge and will acquire the knowledge and skills required both for the SQE assessments and for practising as a Solicitor.

    • LLM/PGDIP Solicitors Practice Programme

    Teaching and assessment

The whole programme takes a real-world approach, encouraging you from the start to consider the scenarios you work with as real cases involving real clients.

This will help you to develop commercial awareness, and to take into account practical considerations as you would need to do when advising on a transaction or dispute.

This is a blended learning programme that is taught through face to face tutorials supported by a range of online resources.

    Internal Assessments

Students on both the LLM pathway and the PGDip pathway will undertake assessments set internally by City Law School for each of the Term 1 and 2 modules.

Those undertaking the LLM pathway will additionally complete internally set assessments for 2 elective modules plus a Legal Practice Research Project.

    External Assessments

The formal SQE1 and SQE2 assessments that are required to qualify as a solicitor can only be taken as part of a centralised process authorised by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA).

This programme aims to prepare you to succeed in these assessments by incorporating multiple-choice questions of the kind used in the SQE1 assessment, and term 2 modules are based on practical legal skills of the type used in the SQE2 assessment.

    • Crown Prosecution Service
    • Local Government lawyers

    How to apply

    Entry requirements

Below is a list of countries with information for each on the qualifications we accept.

    • UK

To enter the course, you must have:

      • A UK honours degree in law normally with a classification of 2.1 or above; OR
      • A UK honours degree in a subject other than law with a classification of 2:1 or above AND a UK Graduate Diploma in Law (or equivalent graduate or postgraduate course that covers the necessary foundations of legal knowledge), normally with an average of at least 50% OR
      • An overseas degree (in any subject) with a classification equivalent to 2:1 or above AND a UK Graduate Diploma in Law (or equivalent graduate or postgraduate course that covers the necessary foundations of legal knowledge), normally with an average of at least 50%

It is possible for a person without a Law degree or Law conversion course (such as the GDL) to qualify as a solicitor (provided they have a degree in another subject or an equivalent qualification or work experience), however, to pass the Solicitors’ Qualification Examinations (SQE) you will need a thorough knowledge of the law of England and Wales.

Our programme is designed to prepare students who already have this from completing a UK law degree or GDL for the SQE, building on the knowledge they gained from those qualifications. For this reason, we are unlikely to offer a place to a student with a law degree from outside the UK if they have not completed the GDL.

The only exceptions to this will be where students have a degree which included the majority of elements which are taught in a UK Law degree or GDL, and would only need to develop a small amount of additional knowledge which we feel they would be able to do whilst also completing the SPP.

If you think you may fall into this category you are welcome to email us, including a copy of your transcript/course syllabus, before applying and we can advise further.

In addition, you must have good English language skills. You must be able to demonstrate English language ability that is at least equivalent to a minimum score of 7.5 overall (and no less than 7 in each section) in the IELTS academic test or equivalent
