    • Software Systems Design (15 credits)

      This module focuses on software systems design and covers a broad spectrum of issues ranging from design of software architectures to formalisation of system behaviour, and from design for bespoke system development to design for component and service-based system development.

    • Research Methods and Professional Issues (15 credits)

      This module aims to equip you with a theoretical understanding of research methods, practical skills in carrying out research, design, evaluation and dissemination, and an awareness of the professional contexts within which research is used.

    • Advanced Databases (15 credits)

      In this module you will gain advanced knowledge about, and develop skills for, different ways of representing, managing, and manipulating data. You will also learn the differences between relational and object-oriented data representation.

    • Cloud Computing (15 credits)

      This module aims to introduce you to the fundamental concept of computing-on-demand leading to Cloud computing. Emphasis is given to the different technologies to build Clouds and how these are used to offer computing on-demand.

    • Advanced Programming - Concurrency (15 credits)

      This module aims to provide you with the practical knowledge of the problems involved, the techniques used to design such systems so as to resolve these problems and the implementation mechanisms used for obtaining correct concurrent systems.

    • Advanced Algorithms and Data Structures (15 credits)

      This module revisits basic data structures and algorithms with more in-depth analysis and introduces advanced algorithms and data structures for diverse applications such as logic programming, machine learning, simulation, signal processing, and information retrieval. You will also be guided to the analysis and selection of algorithms for as well as the development of new algorithms or variants for a given purpose.

    • Project Management (15 credits)

      This module prepares you to take an active part in the development of an Information Systems (IS) project, as IT practitioner, business or systems analyst or project development specialist. It covers the roles and skills needed at each stage of the project development process, the decisions to be made, and their consequences. It deals in breadth with both theoretical and practical issues.

    • Big Data (15 credits)

      In this module you will learn methods and tool for capturing, curating, searching, and analysing large amounts of data. You will learn about data acquisition and gathering, data cleansing and integration and techniques for extracting information.

    • Semantic Web Technologies and Knowledge Graphs (15 credits)

      This module trains the new generation of data scientists with the necessary skills in semantic technologies to meet today’s demands from industry, where data (and knowledge) scientists are expected to semantically orchestrate diverse types of data sources, addressing use-cases that require exploiting and exchanging heterogeneous and large-scale collections of data. This module gives a practical combination of web-technology, data management technology, knowledge representation and artificial intelligence.

    • Information Security Fundamentals (15 credits)

      This module presents information security from a strategic perspective, giving you the appropriate knowledge and skills to discuss, communicate with and function in executive and managerial roles within organisations.

    • Network Security (15 credits)

      Network security is fundamental to cyber security. This module covers solutions to three major problems in network security: (a) protocols built on cryptography to communicate securely over unsecure networks (b) remote attacks carried out through networks (c) network-based defences to detect and protect against cyber attacks.

    • Security Auditing and Certification (15 Credits)

      This module introduces audit and certification as two of the most prominent forms of ICT systems security assessment and covers the main methods, techniques, tools and standards that underpin them. It covers cases where system components operate under non centralised ownership and control, within partially unprotected physical environments and ICT infrastructures, or within the remit of different and not always harmonized jurisdictions.

    • Object Oriented Programming in C++ (15 credits)

      This module will explore object-oriented programming techniques in greater depth and will focus on practical applications using the C++ language, which is widely used in industry.

    Dissertation

    • Individual Project (60 credits)

      This module is a self-directed study, which offers you the opportunity to clearly identify a problem or requirement, justify why it is worth exploring or implementing, develop a method suitable for the work, apply this method, analyse the results and evaluate their implications.

    Teaching and assessment

    You will learn from experts, drawing from City’s world-class research in Systems and Software Engineering, which has one of the largest groups of academics working on this area in London.

    Your MSc Software Engineering with Cloud Computing course will cover significant trends in systems development, including cloud computing and big data.

    You will complete eight modules focussing on advanced engineering concepts and methods, as well as design issues for the systematic development of high-quality complex software systems.

    These are explored using industrial strength technologies, such as the Java object-oriented programming languages and the UML modelling language.

    Modules are assessed through a combination of coursework and examination but some are coursework-only. You will also complete a project to solve a real-world problem.

      For your application to be considered, you must hold a degree of at least a lower second class honours degree, or the equivalent from an international institution or an equivalent professional qualification.

      Please note that your degree must have significant previous exposure to computing, especially programming (preferably in Java or C#) and relational databases, e.g., a BSc in Computer Science.

      Previous academic and commercial experience will also be considered.

      Five years of relevant work experience is required if you do not have a degree background in Computer Science.

    If you are an applicant whose first language is not English, the following qualifications are required:

    • IELTS: 6.5 (minimum of 6.0 in all four components)
    • TOEFL 92 (minimum of 20 in Listening, Reading and Speaking, and 22 in Writing)

    Application process

    You will be expected to submit the following:

    • For all applicants, please upload your degree certificate and transcript of marks from your first degree (if you do not have your final results at the time of making your application, please upload a provisional certificate/interim transcript of marks). A transcript is required in order to have your application processed.
    • If your first language is not English, or you require a Student Visa to study in the UK, please upload a Proof of English Proficiency if you have already obtained it. A list of accepted qualifications can be found on our entry requirements page.
    • Please upload a detailed personal statement outlining why you wish to study this specific course, at City, University of London, as well as explaining how your past studies have prepared you for this course and how it will help you to progress in your career. If you require a Student Visa, please note that the quality of your personal statement will be taken into account by the visa issuing authorities when deciding whether to grant you a student visa or not.
    • If you are applying for a part-time course, or have relevant work experience relating to the degree you are applying for, please upload a copy of your current CV/resume.
