    Our programme is designed to give you the theoretical and practical knowledge to work as an organisational psychologist.

    You will have access to specialist topics such as mindfulness in the workplace, coaching psychology and innovative selection methods.

    You will learn how to select the best employee and deliver effective training to help them achieve their potential. You will also explore the politics of power on corporate boards and undertake your own research.

    We take a holistic perspective considering the individual, the organisation and the socio-political framework where they operate. Everything we teach can be applied in practice.

    You may have a psychology degree or a degree in another field, together with a keen interest in improving working lives.

    Experience of working with data would be beneficial as you will be expected to conduct statistical analysis.

    Core modules

    • Research methods (15 credits)

      In this module, you will learn how to design qualitative and quantitative research studies. You will also learn the basics of how to analyse both qualitative and quantitative data. This module will give you the analytical skills you need for your dissertation and help build your understanding of how to do research.

    • Employee Well-Being (15 credits)

      Workplace well-being is a core knowledge area in the field of work and organisational psychology. The Employee Well-Being module (PSM501) focuses on individual-focused approaches to understanding, protecting, and improving well-being. We’ll explore different definitions of what is meant by well-being (including notions of mental health and flourishing), and look at prominent models of psychological stress, burnout, mental health, and well-being that are used in occupational health research and practice. In the second half of the module, we explore a set of evidence-based intervention approaches designed to promote psychological health in workplace settings, including mindfulness- and acceptance-based approaches, and training programs that have emerged from the positive psychology movement.

    • Work Design, Organisational Change and Development (15 credits)

      The Work Design, Organisational Change and Development module (PSM502) focuses on two key knowledge areas of occupational psychology. In the first half of the module, we introduce prominent theories of work design, and examine epidemiological research that suggests certain work design characteristics (such as lack of autonomy or inadequate rewards) can negatively impact employees’ physical and mental health. We’ll also look at the content and evaluation of work redesign interventions. In the second half the module, we turn to the related topic of organisational development (OD). Here we consider popular OD approaches, such as participative action research and appreciative inquiry, and explore some guiding principles for creating effective helping relationships to support OD projects.

    • Career development and training (15 credits)

      This module is all about how careers can flourish. We look first at how to make sure that people make good career choices – looking at what career success is and how to carve out a fulfilling career. In the second part of the module we move on to learning and development in organisations, exploring the rather surprising research evidence on workplace training, and learning how to put some of the evidence-based approaches into practice.

    • Mindful Leadership Development (15 credits)

      Leadership is a popular topic in management science. Organisational psychologists are often asked to advise on, or create and evaluate, leadership development interventions. Increasingly, scientists-practitioners are drawing on mindfulness to help grow leadership in organisations. In this module, you will learn about the science of leadership and mindfulness and apply this to leadership development in two different yet related ways: In the first part of the module, you will explore and practice growing your personal leadership ‘muscle’. Based on this experience, the second part of the module focuses on helping you become competent in developing leadership in organisations – to help grow the leadership ‘muscle’ of people in organisations.

    • Coaching Psychology (15 credits)

      Coaching has become one of the most popular professional development activities in organisations over the last couple of decades and the evidence base behind it is growing rapidly. In this module you will be introduced to the theories and empirical research that underpin coaching psychology, and we will teach you how to coach. The techniques involved in coaching will be useful to you whatever career path you choose to take and this module gives you a great opportunity to learn and practice these in a safe space.

    • Psychological Assessment (15 credits)

      This module introduces you to assessment in the context of employee selection in organisations. We provide you with an understanding of how selection decisions are made by and about individuals in the workplace. You will be introduced to selection theories, methods of assessment, issues to consider in designing assessment procedures, fairness, diversity and the candidate perspective of selection.

    • The Scientist Practitioner: Advanced Methods & Evidence Based Practice (15 credits)

      In this module, you will learn advanced statistical methods, how to evaluate research, and how to apply evidence in practice. This module will give you the foundation of analytical skills you need to become an evidence-based practitioner, allowing you to apply scientific evidence to the real world. It will also introduce you to some more advanced statistical methods, and teach you how to critically assess scientific evidence.

    Dissertation

    • Organisational Psychology Dissertation (60 credits)

      This module will provide you with the opportunity to acquire the necessary knowledge, understanding and skills to design and conduct empirical research in Organisational Psychology.

    Teaching and assessment

    You will directly learn from our academic experts who are involved in external consulting.

    From the first term you will learn through group work and discussions around the core content. You will benefit from a blend of diverse perspectives gained through collaboration with your peers.

    We will assess you mainly on practitioner focused assignments rather than on essays and exams. You might be asked to write a pitch for a company explaining the theory of your proposal, before presenting it as a practitioner.

    You benefit from this varied assessment style in learning to write from different academic and practitioner perspectives and understand different client needs.

    Entry requirements

    • UK

      All applicants should have an upper second-class honours degree (or an equivalent grade from an overseas institution).

      You should also be able to demonstrate some form of work experience within your application. Work experience in a psychology-related or human resource setting is highly desirable, but not essential.

      Applicants who are interested in becoming a chartered psychologist within the British system should hold the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) with the British Psychological Society (BPS). This membership is usually granted automatically to individuals who have completed an undergraduate degree in psychology that is recognised by the BPS.

    English language requirements

    If English is not your first language, you need to provide evidence of English proficiency. We only accept the following English language qualifications:

    • GCSE - grade C or above
    • CSE - grade C or above
    • SEB - grade C or above
    • IELTS - 7 or above in each section
    • Pearson test with a score of at least 67 in each area.

    INTO English Language Programmes

    If you need to improve your English language skills before you enter this course, INTO City, University of London offers a range of English language courses. These intensive and flexible courses are designed to improve your English ability for entry to this degree.

    Application process

    You will be expected to submit the following:

    • One application form
    • A short personal statement (c800-1200 words) outlining:
      1. why you are applying for this programme
      2. what work experience you've had so far.
    • A copy of your degree transcript: We require an original transcript or a copy certified by your institution. If you have not yet graduated, you will be required to send us your degree transcript as soon as it is available. You will not be able to register as a City student without having supplied your degree transcript
    • Email addresses of two referees, at least one must be an academic referee if you are a recent graduate. Other suitable referees may include a current employer or an organisation where you have undertaken relevant work experience.
      It is your responsibility to request references using the reference form and ensure that we have received them – it is suggested that you ask your referee to cc you into the email sent to us when the reference is sent.

    All complete applications will be considered and shortlisted application will be invited to a online programme presentation and interview.
