Benefits of this course

The academic element of the programme covers the following themes:

You will learn about the role of the midwife and examine current issues in midwifery practice and the promotion of health and well-being among pregnant women and their families.

The modular course structure also allows you to advance to a master’s degree by taking additional modules and completing a dissertation.

Who is this course for?

If you are an experienced adult nurse, this postgraduate diploma will give you a fast-track route into midwifery.

You will build on your existing professional skills, gaining the specialist knowledge and experience to become a registered midwife.

Duration:

  • You will combine theoretical study and develop clinical skills within our excellent clinical simulation facilities.

    You will be allocated to a clinical area and supported by a trained midwifery mentor and practice education facilitator.

    Independent study time is also given so students can develop their individual learning.

    • Foundations Skills for Midwifery Led Care (15 credits)

      This module provides you with the skills, knowledge and professional attitude necessary for the transition from nursing to midwifery practice. You will be introduced to the evidence base underpinning the skills necessary to deliver partnership based midwifery-led care.

    • Biological Basis of Pregnancy and the Puerperium (15 credits)

      The aim of this module is to build upon your prior knowledge of applied human biological theory and facilitate new knowledge and learning to underpin acquisition of midwifery skills for practice

    • Public Health, Midwifery and Healthy Communities (15 credits)

      This module is intended to introduce you to midwifery as part of the public health agenda. It will enable you to critically evaluate the midwife’s role in public health and health promotion.

    • Professional issues Complex Midwifery Practice (15 credits)

      This module is designed to enable you to re-explore the professional issues relating to contemporary midwifery practices. It will consolidate the exploration and understanding of theoretical and professional issues that are relevant for midwifery practice.

    • Research Methods in Midwifery (15 credits)

      The aim of the module is to enable you to develop your theoretical, methodological and research skills. It will enhance your ability to conduct rigorous research and reach sound analytical conclusions which can form the basis of effective practice.

    • Developing Autonomy in Midwifery Practice (30 credits)

      This module will enable you to assume the lead professional role in providing sensitive care for women experiencing low risk pregnancy and childbirth, and to coordinate the care of women in a high-risk pregnancy where other members of the multi-disciplinary team are involved.

    • Developing Skills for Caring In Normal Midwifery Practice (15 credits)

      This module is intended to provide you with the skills, knowledge and professional attitude necessary for the transition from nursing to midwifery practice. Through a series of clinical placements, you will be part of the maternity team providing antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care.

    Teaching and assessment

    Your learning will be divided into 60 per cent clinical practice experience and 40 per cent theory and academic study.

    Our Clinical Skills Centre has a range of specialist equipment to simulate birthing situations from normal to emergency, enabling you to develop your skills in a safe environment.

    From the start of your studies, you will be working directly with women and their families, supported by your mentors and clinical supervisors.

    You will gain experience across all areas of maternity services, including:

    • community clinics
    • birthing centres
    • antenatal clinics
    • delivery suites
    • antenatal/postnatal wards
    • women's homes.

    You will keep a portfolio of practice, demonstrating how you apply theoretical learning to your clinical work.

    You will be assessed through a combination of group work, written coursework, written and clinical examination.

    Placement

    Clinical placements are an integral part of this programme and you will be allocated a place in one of our seven communities of practice in east and north London.

    Fees and funding

    Fees for academic year 2021/22

    Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip)

    Full-time per year

    UK: £9,250

    Overseas/EU: £15,090

    Fees in each subsequent year of study (where applicable) will be subject to an annual increase of 2%. We will confirm any change to the annual tuition fee to you in writing prior to you commencing each subsequent year of study (where applicable).

    The Department of Health and Social Care has now confirmed that from August 2018 this course will be eligible for tuition fee and maintenance loans via Student Finance England. The loan will support your studies and enable you to start a rewarding career in healthcare.

    An agreed training grant fund (previously known as salary support) has been put in place at trusts for this programme delivered at City, University of London. Please note that in some instances HEE may be offering training grant funding, but not tuition fees. Funding for tuition fees will require you to have received a confirmed commissions letter for this programme.

    Future Finance Loans

    Future Finance offers students loans of between £2,500 and £40,000 to help cover tuition fees and living expenses. All students and courses are considered. All loans are subject to credit checks and approval for further details please visit the City Finance website.

    Career

    On successful completion of this diploma, you will gain registered midwife status with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, an internationally recognised professional qualification allowing you to practice in the UK and overseas.

    You will be able to pursue opportunities in a range of settings including:

    • midwifery led stand-alone birth centres
    • acute units
    • independent practice.

    As your career progresses, you could consider specialist, leadership or educational roles, such as:

    • midwife consultant
    • clinical management
    • teaching
    • academic research.
    • You can also work independently as a self-employed midwife.

      • at least six months clinical experience as an adult nurse
      • a lower second-class honours degree or above
      • registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council
      • Disclosure and Barring Service Enhanced Check and Occupational Health clearance.

      Shortlisted applicants will be required to attend a Selection Day held at City, University of London before an offer can be made. At the Selection Day applicants are interviewed to assess their values match those of the NHS constitution, as well as having the opportunity to find out more about the course from our staff and students.

    Applicants educated outside of an English speaking country, without GCSEs are required to hold:

    TOEFL iBT: 94 overall with at least 27 in Writing, 24 in reading and Listening and 23 in Speaking sections.
