You will learn independently by forming a dissertation proposal and, if accepted, undertaking research and writing.
We will give you the support of an experienced legal expert from The City Law School.
You have total freedom to decide on your own subject, although our tutors can offer guidance.
Previous subjects have included medical negligence tribunals, company directors’ statutory duties, pre-nuptial contracts and Sharia law.

Who is this course for?
If you have completed your LPC with us at The City Law School and want to improve your prospects while demonstrating a specific commitment to legal practice, this programme is ideal.
This course is only available if you completed the LPC before September 2017 and within five years of completion.
You will be self-motivated and organised as this is a distance learning course with no taught lessons.

Duration:
- Full-time: 6 months
- Part-time: 12 months
Total credits: 215
Modules:
The course can be completed on either a full-time or part-time basis. If you choose to complete the course on a full-time basis you will be required to submit the dissertation within 6 months. If you choose to study on a part-time basis you be required to submit the dissertation within 12 months.

On this course you will undertake further research and analysis leading to the completion of a 15,000-20,000 word dissertation on an approved topic related to professional legal practice.
Successful completion of the dissertation, following completion of the Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice (LPC) at The City Law School leads to the award of an LLM in Legal Practice.

LPC Dissertation (60 credits)
This course is designed to enable you to convert a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice from City to a Master’s Degree. You will be required to complete a 15,000-20,000 word dissertation on an approved topic related to professional legal practice.

Teaching and assessment
You will undertake all learning independently, as this is a distance learning programme with no taught lessons.
An induction session will be held around the time of registration. In the session we provide guidance on research methods, resources and the supervision process.
You will be given an expert supervisor to support you throughout your research process and the dissertation writing stage.
We expect you to complete a dissertation of between 15,000 and 20,000 words, which can be submitted on one of two submission dates.

This course is only open to City LPC students and does not include an additional fee.
Funding
Future Finance Loans
Future Finance offers students loans of between £2,500 and £40,000 to help cover tuition fees and living expenses. All students and courses are considered. All loans are subject to credit checks and approval. For further details visit the Future Finance website.

By the end of the Legal Practice LLM you will have built a strong specialist knowledge base and developed transferable skills in research and writing. Your career prospects will be significantly enhanced.
If you are seeking a training contract or pursuing an alternative legal career, our LLM will be a valuable qualification to add to your CV.
Your dissertation will be a powerful asset in demonstrably proving your commitment and knowledge of a specialist area of law.

How to apply
Entry requirements
UK
The LPC conversion course is only open to students who registered for the LPC within the last 5 years and before 2017/18.
From 2017/18 onwards the LPC contains an integrated LLM option so there is no need for a conversion course.
Application process
Take time to develop your dissertation proposal and pay sufficient attention to your title, coverage and methodology in particular. Your proposal should be:
- related to the knowledge and skills required for legal professional practice in England and Wales
- broadly related to the areas covered in the LPC
- based on the law of England and Wales (though it may include some comparison with another jurisdiction as a minor element).
