Benefits of this course

You will develop skills as a multimedia journalist by telling stories about business, finance and the economy.

We aim to give you the professional skills and knowledge needed to work in fast-paced multimedia newsrooms around the world. Through funded study trips to China and New York you will get to grips with global economics and stock markets such as the Hang Seng Index and Wall Street.

This course is for anyone who wants to make a difference and understand what makes the world work.

If you are attracted to a varied career spanning from reporting on global finance and writing about consumer affairs to conducting in depth investigations, our Financial Journalism MA is for you.

You may have no background in finance but wish to specialise and discover great stories. Or you may have a finance background and want to specialise in journalism.

  • Journalism Ethics (30 credits)

    This module will support you in placing journalism practices, processes and products in their wider contexts, enabling you to be an ethical and reflexive practitioner. You will have the opportunity to explore ethical issues as they affect journalists, including yourself.

  • Journalism Portfolio (30 credits)

    In this module you will acquire the technical and professional capacity to work effectively as a journalist. You will develop entrepreneurial skills to operate as a freelancer and to position yourself in the industry.

  • Editorial Production (30 credits)

    You will develop practical competence in a range of editorial practices, and broaden your understanding of management skills required to work in the media industry.

  • Fundamental Issues in Financial Journalism (15 credits)

    This module will provide you with an informed understanding of the requirements of financial journalism. You will receive insight into the key economic and financial issues that will help inform your coverage.

Elective modules

  • Data Journalism (15 credits)

    This module aims to train you to work effectively as a professional data journalist. By the end of the module you will be able to locate, manipulate, visualise and combine data from a range of sources and demonstrate effective skills using the web-based and other technologies involved.

  • Journalism Innovation (15 credits)

    In this module you will develop a creative, flexible and innovative approach to journalism. You will learn how to create dynamic content for a start-up media enterprise; or how to launch your own journalistic website.

  • UK Media Law (15 credits)

    In this module you will explore the characteristics of UK law and the legal system relating to journalism.

  • Data Visualisation & Communication (15 credits)

    Taken after Data Journalism this module will enable you to develop an understanding of the processes, software and other tools to create effective interactive data visualisations.

  • Political Economy of Global Finance (15 credits)

    This module is designed to provide you with a critical review of the key institutions and processes in the global financial system, with a particular emphasis on the connections between these institutions.

  • Global Political Economy: Contemporary Approaches (15 credits)

    This module provides in-depth knowledge of the rich intellectual history of global political economy as it has developed over time.

Dissertation

  • Final Project (30 credits)

    This is a capstone module in which you have the opportunity to demonstrate command, evaluation and synthesis of learning in the Masters programme. You will apply that learning to a project with an associated reflection, both of which will be assessed.

Core Elective

  • Reporting the Global Economy (15 credits)

    Using Shanghai and New York as case studies this module will provide you with an understanding of the coverage of business, economics and finance. You will gain an insight into the world financial system and how they are changing.

  • Reporting Business (15 credits)

    This module will provide you with an understanding of the requirement of covering business to a professional level.

Teaching and assessment

The course is delivered by a wide range of journalism professionals who have worked as columnists, editors and broadcasters.

Guest lectures are also delivered by renowned economists from City’s Business School and elsewhere and guest speakers are invited from across the industry.

You will work on live online production days and produce a television news programme.

Your learning activities will include lectures, practical work in groups and individually, personal tutorials, and independent learning.

Fees in each subsequent year of study (where applicable) will be subject to an annual increase of two percent. We will confirm any change to the annual tuition fee to you in writing prior to you commencing each subsequent year of study (where applicable).

How to apply

Entry requirements

Below is a list of countries with information on each about which qualifications we accept.

  • UK

    Applicants should hold an upper second class honours degree or the equivalent from an international institution. Consideration will also be given to mature applicants with substantial work experience in radio and/or television journalism.

    Prerequisites

    • You should hold an upper second class honours degree or the equivalent from an international institution. Applicants that are below an upper second class degree can still apply. You may be asked to attend an interview before admission to the programme. For overseas students, this will normally be done by telephone or Skype.
    • Rolling Admissions: students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible to the course. This is a small course and places can fill up quickly. There is a rolling admission policy and students will normally be given a decision within four weeks of application. Interviews, either in person or by telephone, may be required.

    Other Suitable Qualifications

    As well as new graduates, we also welcome mature applicants with substantial work experience.

    INTO City, University of London

    Don’t meet the entry requirements? INTO City, University of London offers a range of academic and English language programmes to help prepare you for study at City, University of London. You’ll learn from experienced teachers in a dedicated international study centre.

If English is not your first language, you must get a minimum overall score of 7.0 in the IELTS English language test, including at least 7.0 in the writing component of the test and no lower than 6.5 in any other component. Application process

When you are able to apply you will be expected to submit the following

  1. One application form
  2. A copy of your degree transcript: We require an original transcript or a copy certified by your institution. If you have not yet graduated, you will be required to send us your degree transcript as soon as it is available. You will not be able to register as a City student without having supplied your degree transcript.
  3. Details of your work experience in journalism. Applicants should be able to demonstrate commitment to journalism through relevant work experience. Copy and paste the details into the "Personal Statement" section of the online application form. Please also provide a copy of your CV.
  4. The following two articles:
    1. A short personal statement (c800 words) outlining why you are applying for this programme. Include your interest and work experience in both journalism and the financial sector
    2. A 250-word article on a topic of your choice in business or financial journalism is required, based on your own personal investigation of the topic, including an interview with someone relevant to the topic.

Please note: Academic references are not required when you submit your application. However, the admissions tutor may request them at a later date to help make a decision on your application.
