You will gain a thorough grounding in research skills and applied data analysis to support your role as an evidence-based practitioner, able to critically evaluate approaches to support and care for children and young people experiencing mental ill-health.

You will address key principles of child and adolescent mental healthcare and emotional well-being, together with current issues affecting mental health policy and practice through core discipline-specific modules.

Elective modules will allow you to build your professional knowledge and pursue your particular areas of interest.

  • Introduction to Research Methods and Applied Data Analysis (30 credits)

    The aim of this module is to develop your theoretical, methodological and research skills to enhance your ability to conduct rigorous research and to reach sound analytical conclusions, which form the basis for effective service delivery in health and social care organisations.

  • Critical Approaches to Advanced Practice (15 credits)

    This module examines critical approaches to advanced practice across health and social contexts. Through a critical exploration of practice, political and service issues the module enhances confidence and capability to work at an advanced level within your field of expertise.

Discipline specific modules

  • Child Protection: Working Together, Managing Risk and Resilience (15 credits)

    The learning objectives for this module are developing your knowledge and awareness of the safe and ethical implementation in practice of safeguarding policy and legislative frameworks to promote effective inter- agency and collaborative practice in the statutory and voluntary sectors.

  • Early Identification and Psychological Development (15 credits)

    This module will examine key developmental theories concerning psychological development, in conjunction with the concepts of early identification, to promote effective intervention, for optimum mental health in children, adolescents and their families.

  • Child and Adolescent Mental Health: Therapeutic Approaches and the Evidence (15 credits)

    Through theoretical seminars this module will examine both the evidence base and efficacy of contemporary psycho-therapeutic approaches. These will include systemic, parenting, psychodynamic, cognitive, and pharmacological modalities.

Dissertation

  • MSc Dissertation (60 credits)

    The dissertation provides you with the opportunity to develop your abilities in research design, data collection, analysis and critical interpretation, and to apply these to the investigation of a particular problem or issue within your specialist area.

Teaching and assessment

You will learn through a dynamic mix of direct and interactive methods, e-learning and work-based learning, including:

Your modules will be led by leading researchers and experienced practitioners, ensuring that your studies are informed by the latest developments in the field.

You will learn in groups that bring together students from a range of healthcare subjects, encouraging a multi-disciplinary approach that reflects professional practice.

Duration

Full-time: one year (two days a week) for taught modules, plus up to one year for dissertation.

    International Students coming to study in the UK may need to apply for a visa or entry clearance to come to the UK to study. The way that you apply may vary depending on the length of your course. There are different rules for:

    • Students on courses of more than six months
    • Students on courses of less than six months

English language requirements

If your first language is not English, one of the following is also required:

  • A first degree from a UK university or an overseas institution recognised by City as providing adequate evidence of proficiency in the English language. For example, from institutions in Australia, Canada or the USA.
  • IELTS: 7.0.
