    Who is this course for?

    If you want to learn about AI as science, this course is perfect for you. You will learn how to apply deep learning and other groundbreaking AI methods to image recognition, sequence analysis, optimal control, creativity and cognitive modelling.

    You will also gain an understanding of the ethical and legal challenges of AI and how to make AI explainable and fair.

    You are required to have a degree in computer science, computational neuroscience, mathematics, computer engineering, or natural sciences.

    You will need to have good programming skills, particularly in Python.

    You’ll also need a good imagination, be creative and have a keen interest in learning in a collaborative environment where intellectual debate and teamwork are encouraged.

    Modules

    The programme has six core modules and three elective modules from which you will choose two.

    The course has been designed to adapt to developments in the sector, with space within the modules to explore your own interests.

    In your third term, you undertake an individual project under the supervision of one of our AI experts.

    Core modules

    • Principles of Artificial Intelligence (15 credits)

      This module will provide you with a broad introduction in theory and practice to the main areas of nature-inspired, adaptive Artificial Intelligence. You will learn cutting-edge engineering approaches in the area of Artificial Neural Networks and evolutionary computing.

    • Programming and Mathematics for Artificial Intelligence (15 credits)

      In this module you will gain fundamental programming and mathematical skills for studying specialist Artificial Intelligence topics. The paradigm used is object-oriented programming, and Python the guiding programming language

    • Computational Cognitive Systems (15 credits)

      This module allows you to analyse cognitive processes by gaining specific knowledge and skills in modelling perception, attention and memory, learning, and decision-making.

    • Agents and Multi-Agent Systems (15 credits)

      This module allows you to learn agent architectures that perform differently according to the characteristics of the task environment, e.g., whether the “world” in which the agent is situated is dynamic or static, deterministic or stochastic, discrete or continuous.

    • Deep Learning for Image Analysis (15 credits)

      The main purpose of the module is to study Deep Learning techniques for solving classification, detection, segmentation and image generation problems.

    • Deep Learning for Sequence Analysis (15 credits)

      The main purpose of the module is to study the Deep Learning techniques for solving sequence prediction problems. Particularly, the main focus in this module is directed to the study of Language Models and Recurrent Neural Networks.

    Elective modules

    • Deep Reinforcement Learning (15 credits)

      The main purpose of the module is to study how to solve optimization problems using Deep Learning techniques. An important part of this module is to learn Reinforcement Learning techniques starting from the mathematical foundations, including Markov Decision Processes and Dynamic Programming.

    • Explainable Artificial Intelligence: Ethical and Legal Challenges (15 credits)

      In this module you will learn about the problems inherent to opaque AI systems, as well as become aware of the importance of interpretability and/or explainability as AI/ML system properties when deploying AI/ML systems in the real world.

    • Industrial Artificial Intelligence (15 credits)

      The main aim of this module is to provide you with an understanding of how to design, specify, implement and evaluate AI products, specifically in the creative industry. You will learn how to apply rule-based and deep learning approaches to generate art as part of a business process and following systems engineering principles.

    Dissertation

    • Individual Project (60 credits)

      This module is a self-directed study, which offers you the opportunity to clearly identify a problem or requirement, justify why it is worth exploring or implementing, develop a method suitable for the work, apply this method, analyse the results and evaluate their implications.

    Teaching and assessment

    What you will learn

    During your time on this Masters in Artificial Intelligence, you learn the latest and most advanced Artificial Intelligence models and technologies and how to apply them to real-life problems in a collaborative environment.

    With the skills learnt, you will be equipped with all the necessary knowledge to ensure a successful, cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence project in your chosen application or research area, with an internship in a company of the sector or guided by our specialised scientists.

    This project, your MSc thesis, will be the perfect culmination of your studies. The curriculum is designed and kept up to date by the Artificial Intelligence Research Centre at City (CitAI)

    How you will study

    Lectures and hands-on labs are delivered by recognised and enthusiastic experts, active researchers in the field.

    Teaching on this Masters in Artificial Intelligence is entirely project-based, so you can learn to tackle real-world AI challenges in a collaborative and supportive learning setting and in a pragmatic manner.

    Each module is introduced in lectures. These give you examples, highlight the most essential aspects of AI, and point you to complementary study and research resources.

    You apply this material and develop your skills in laboratory sessions and tutorials, working on practical problem-solving exercises and critical theoretical questions. You can also see concepts and techniques in action in the lab, using the latest software, tools, and platforms.

    Our teaching methods mean your levels of specialist knowledge and learning autonomy increase as you work through the programme.

    The Programme Director and the team provide learning support and feedback throughout your course.

    All in all, the MSc is designed as a perfect balance between the necessary theory and practical experience. It is designed thoroughly and up-to-date. You learn to think critically and to analyse different Artificial Intelligence problems and how to implement them effectively.

    Scholarships worth £2,000 are offered to outstanding postgraduate students, who are applying for a course in Computer Science or Engineering. You do not need to make a separate application.       At least upper second class degree in computer engineering, psychology or biology with over two years of programming experience as a developer in Python for Machine Learning/AI may be considered.

      A lower second class BSc/BEng/BA degree in the specified areas could exceptionally be considered for applicants with an additional relevant MSc who meet the conditions above. Acceptance in both cases is at our discretion.

    • IELTS: 6.5 (minimum of 6.0 in all four components)
    • TOEFL 92 (minimum of 20 in Listening, Reading and Speaking, and 22 in Writing)

    Application process

    You will be expected to submit the following:

    • For all applicants, please upload your degree certificate and transcript of marks from your first degree (if you do not have your final results at the time of making your application, please upload a provisional certificate/interim transcript of marks). A transcript is required in order to have your application processed.
    • If your first language is not English, or you require a Student Visa to study in the UK, please upload a Proof of English Proficiency if you have already obtained it. A list of accepted qualifications can be found on our entry requirements page.
    • Please upload a detailed personal statement outlining why you wish to study this specific course, at City, University of London, as well as explaining how your past studies have prepared you for this course and how it will help you to progress in your career. If you require a Student Visa, please note that the quality of your personal statement will be taken into account by the visa issuing authorities when deciding whether to grant you a student visa or not.
    • If you have relevant work experience relating to the degree you are applying for, please upload a copy of your current CV/resume.
