Travel Health course

This short course will focus on:

• professional responsibilities for those working in travel health
• general standards for healthcare professionals
• immunology and vaccine technology
• vaccine storage, handling, administration and record keeping
• vaccine preventable diseases
• the art of the Travel Health Risk Assessment
• health promotion and preventative measures for non-vaccine preventable diseases
• sources of evidence-based information and resources
• hot topics in travel health
• international Health Requirements
• infectious diseases including food and water borne diseases
• malaria and mosquito borne diseases
• pre and post exposure rabies guidance.

The study day is delivered in line with the 2018 Royal College of Nurses Competencies in Travel Health.

Who is it for?

This study day is suitable for qualified nurses, GP’s and pharmacists who undertake pre-travel health consultations and want to ensure they are up to date with best practice and the latest developments in travel health.

This course runs over one full day (09:30-16:30).

By the end of the course you will:

• Have an awareness and understanding of the importance of travel health and prevention of travel related illnesses
• Have confidence in the principles and practices of vaccination schedules
• Know how to access evidence-based and up-to-date sources of information in the travel health field
• Have meaningful training for NMC revalidation purposes
• Recognise relevant disease risks within geographical areas and be aware of potential transmission, symptoms and treatment
• Have an appreciation of malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases and the importance of prevention including chemopropylaxis and bite-avoidance measures.

This course combines structured and interactive teaching though lectures, group work, real life-scenarios and the opportunity to share ideas and experiences.

Immunisation updates will consist of a Public Health England animation on immunisation and immunology plus video around vaccine production in line with Public Health England’s National Minimum Standards and Core Curriculum for Immunisation training.

Evidence of learning and a certificate of attendance will be awarded to those that fully attend the course.

There is no formal assessment.

This course is worth 6 hours of CPD.

This 1-day travel health course is aimed at healthcare professionals who have experience in undertaking pre-travel health consultations.

English requirements

You will need a good level of spoken and written English to enrol on this course.
