Vasiliki Komianou

Portrait of Vasiliki Komianou, former BMus student

Music has always been more than a hobby for Vasiliki

Why did you choose to study a BMus?

Since I was really young I knew that music would be more than a hobby for me. Around the time I was 16 I started thinking that if I want to do this, to have music as my job, I would have to do it properly so I decided to study a BMus.

Why did you choose to study at City, University of London?

Τhe variety of modules we can choose from in the second and third years really made it one of my top options, as well as the Guildhall School of Music and Drama lessons. At City, I would get vocal lessons from the best teachers without missing the other, academic modules I could take, and of course I would be in an environment which would not consist only of musicians. Also, I have to admit that the fact that its location is in central London made my decision to choose City easier.

What's the best thing about studying in central London?

That's easy - central London is like the centre of the world! You can go everywhere and there are so many interesting things around. As I grew up in a quite small place, having such a wide range of options for things to do and places to visit is very fascinating. Also, London hosts so many different people from so many different countries. Meeting them, talking with them and seeing (and sometimes being part of) their completely different daily life routines has really broadened my mind a lot - and I love that!

If you could give one piece of advice to a prospective City BMus student, what would it be?

Try to give everything a shot. You never know what you might like unless you try it, and I'm not only referring to strictly academic things but also the societies you might join or the events you'll decide to go to during Freshers' Week. London is a place that gives you a whole lot of things to experience, so don't miss out!
