James King

Computer Science (BSc) BSc (Hons)

James says the knowledge he has learnt through his placements have been amazing.

Why did you decide to do a placement while at City, University of London?

The main reason was the ability to get three years work experience (on PP) whilst also gaining a Degree. The knowledge you learn through a placement is amazing and City University London allows longer placements through PP and provides support with studying only one day a week.

Where were your placements and what were your roles?

  • At the Duston School, I worked as a IT Technician and was responsible for for network infrastructure, virtual servers and clients (VMWare vSphere + Hyper-V), Server Mgmt, SAN (Storage), backup maintenance.
  • At the Cutter Project Ltd, I worked as a Systems Engineer supporting users with Desktop and ServerVirtualisation systems, Storage, MS RDS systems, VMWare, Veeam Backups. As well as designing and implementing these systems.

What has been the most important thing gained from your placement?

Professional knowledge. Working in industry is very different from studying, you learn the actual skills to do the job as well as getting the experience required to be employed. You also gain experience of the field of work you are planning to do and can decide if it is right for you.

What do you want to do after graduating?

I am planning to carry on working for Cutter, gaining more knowledge and experience.
