Heather Clarke

Heather states that her 6 month internship enabled her to combine real-world experience with the completion of my MSc dissertation.

Why did you decide to do a placement while at City, University of London?

It enabled me to combine real-world experience with the completion of my MSc dissertation through a 6-month internship.

Where were your placements and what were your roles?

I was placed at PHD (Peter Hutchinson Designs), but I didn't really have a job title as such.

I designed and developed a new e-commerce website for the company, from initial design concepts, following a user-led design including administering user testing and surveys, through to a final working prototype for them to take forward and build on as their new website for selling their outdoor gear products.

What has been the most important thing gained from your placement?

Completing a full web design project from concept to completion, on my own, and ensuring that client needs were met. Being able to apply the knowledge gained in my MSc modules on a real-world project was invaluable in both reinforcing what I have learned, and being able to showcase to potential employers that knowledge by including the project in my portfolio.

What do you plan to do after graduating?

If my results are okay, I should be graduating in July, but have been actively seeking employment as a web designer/front-end developer since submitting my dissertation in January. As of now, the search continues.
