Bartosz Kostyk

Mathematics BSc (Hons)

Bartosz undertook a placement with American Express whilst studying on BSc Mathematical Science.

1.    Why did you decide to do a placement while at City, University of London?

In the current job market finishing university with a year-long experience in the
industry is a great advantage when it comes to applying for graduate roles. It helps to
set you apart from other applicants. If successful, securing a place on a graduate
scheme in the company you did a placement year with, it gives you a safety of job
after graduation and lets you enjoy the last year of your undergraduate education a
little bit more.

2.    Where was your placement and what was your role?

I did my placement in the financial department at American Express. The backbone of
my role was responsibility for creating and maintaining the internal revenue
forecasts for two revenue streams. However the company is very flexible and I got
involved in a variety of different projects and analysis throughout the year giving me
a chance to explore the wider finance organization.

3.    What has been the most important thing gained from your placement?

The ability to test a role before fully committing to the graduate scheme is a great

advantage. It makes you understand where you get your personal energy from and
makes you more savvy thinking about your future career. Also a year is enough time
to develop few skills that will sure set you apart on the graduate scheme, hopefully
helping you to progress quickly in your next role.

4.    What do you plan to do after graduating?

I'm planning to return to American Express on a graduate role secured during my placement year.

5.    Anything else you would like to highlight about City?

City offers a great support in applying for placement/summer internships, even in

courses that are not necessarily focused on it (such as mathematics). Make sure you
take advantage of it as much as you can from day one, in fact I met my employer in a
CV-check session during my first year of studies.
