Abdullah Shakure

Mechanical Engineering (BEng) BEng (Hons)

Abdullah chose City for the vibrant London location.

What is your course of study?

MEng Mechanical Engineering

Why did you choose to study at City, University of London?

I chose to study at City because the structure of the course was more suited to my preference. Being one of the top universities in London with excellent employability record and its vibrant location were just some of the reasons that contributed to my decision to study at this university.

What do you enjoy most about your course?

The enjoyable aspect of this course is the opportunity to see engineering application in practice. There are opportunities where students are invited to visit industrial sites such as Littlebrook Power Station.

Also there are number of resources available to use and staff are always very helpful. The fact that there are a range of group projects and electives modules to choose from gives students the flexibility to tailor their degree and skills towards a particular area which they enjoy.

What has been your favourite module and why?

Heat Transfer and Turbomachinery has been my favourite module as it is more related to my interest. It has given me fundamental knowledge of mechanical equipment both static and rotating including heat exchangers, coolers, boilers and gas turbines.

I was also able to apply the knowledge from this module in real industrial applications whilst working for Arup. The module allowed me to gain insight in the field of turbomachinery which has helped me extensively in my dissertation focusing on design and analysis of a radial turbine.

What has been a highlight of your course so far?

Being recognised and awarded for achieving high grades. Support and feedback from the staff has been prompt and very helpful. I have also enjoyed range of exciting group projects. Also the brand new engineering facility is outstanding.

What do you plan to do after you graduate?

I plan to build up on the skills I have gained especially in the field of Heat Transfer and Turbomachinery. I also look forward to joining an Engineering Graduate Scheme in a Consultancy as it would provide me with resources and opportunities to help me develop further to meet my short and long term goals.
