Selim's research focuses on the protection of foreign investment in times of conflict and the surrounding circumstances. Recent extensive conflicts such as Arab Spring uprisings as well as the annexation of Crimea had significant effects on foreign investment in those regions. His research will examine the application of the international investment law during such extensive conflicts taking into consideration different aspects of the relationship between the host states and the investors. This will be supplemented by the analysis of the effects of the surrounding circumstances, i.e. one one hand prior conduct and expectations of the investors and on the other hand economic, political, and developmental factors in the host State on the other. The aim of the project is to put the application of investment law during conflict situations in a broader context within the international legal system.
Selim graduated from the Galatasaray University in 2013 with First Class Honours and obtained his LLM from the University of Cambridge with a specialization in public international law. He is a member of the Istanbul Bar since 2015. He practiced international arbitration until starting his Ph.D. studies and continues to advise corporations in investment-state disputes.
