Dr Kathryn Emerson
Kathryn completed her first two degrees within the University of London: a Joint Honours BA in Music and Psychology at Royal Holloway, followed by an MSc in Music, Mind and Brain at Goldsmiths College, where her research investigated the sexual selection hypothesis in relation to the evolution of music. Her interest in the psychology of music then broadened to include connections with language, and she completed her PhD in the Department of Human Communication Sciences at the University of Sheffield, under the supervision of Ray Wilkinson and Victoria Williamson. Her research used Conversation Analysis to explore the social interaction of choir rehearsals, focusing on the way choral conductors create musical changes through their verbal and non-verbal interaction with singers. She has presented her interdisciplinary work at international conferences in a range of fields, including Music Psychology, Conversation Analysis and Gesture Studies.
Whilst studying for her PhD, Kathryn taught Research Methods and Statistics at the University of Sheffield as a Teaching Assistant, and then as a University Teacher. She took up the position of Lecturer at City, University of London, in November 2019.
