Jason Sender, IT contractor, Computing Courses

My name is Dr Jason Sender. I am an IT contractor specialising in Oracle Policy Automation (OPA) software.

This software is used to automate policy and business rules. While it has typically been used in the public sector, it is also being used now in the private sector in industries such as insurance. In my spare time I am also the finance director of an internet start-up company.

While I work full-time, I believe in education and the benefits it can bring in terms of upskilling and professional development. I have four degrees, including a PhD in philosophy and an MBA, in which I majored in finance and did a lot of Excel modelling.

I wanted to strengthen and enhance my existing IT skill set and therefore I decided to take some computing courses at City, University of  London. As a contractor, I cannot afford to take time out for professional development during the normal working hours – so taking a short course at City really worked for me because it fitted well around my full-time job, was conveniently located, and was offered by a well-respected institution. It was also good value for money.

I ended up taking four evening IT courses at City in order to refresh and extend my skills. I took Oracle and SQL, MS Excel for Business and Visual Basic for Applications in Excel Parts 1 and 2. I very much liked the last two courses!

I’ve now got a place on a part-time MSc in Software Engineering at the University of Oxford; so I guess I will further my IT upskilling through my courses there, although I may come back for a further course at City sometime in the future.
