On 24th February 2020, representatives from the Middlesex Masonic Charity visited City, University of London to meet with our midwifery students and staff, including the recipients of the first Gordon Bourne bursaries.

In memory of its founder, Gordon Bourne, the Charity has made a donation of £20,000 over two years to support the bursaries and the role of midwives within or connected to the area of the original county of Middlesex.

At the visit, Adrian Howorth, Chairman of the Charity, and David Chambers, Correspondent Trustee, were taken on a guided tour of the suite of midwifery facilities at City, lead by Dr Suzanne Lee,  Joint Programme Director Pre-registration Midwifery.

After the tour, a session was held with Dr Ric Khine, Divisional Lead for Midwifery and Radiography, Judy Brook, Associate Dean of the School of Health Sciences, and seven of the first ten recipients of the Gordon Bourne bursaries, who shared what a career in midwifery meant to them and the importance of their bursaries.

Reflecting on the visit, Dr Suzanne Lee, Joint Programme Director Pre-registration Midwifery at the School of Health Sciences, said:

“We were very happy to welcome the Charity’s representatives to see our midwifery teaching facilities at City, and meet the students who received the bursaries. The donation will be an enormous help for the students in supporting them to continue on the programme and progress into careers as midwives.”

Adrian Howorth, Chairman, Middlesex Masonic Charity, said:

It was a pleasure to visit the midwife faculty and be shown the facilities by your principals. It was a great privilege to meet some of the recipients of this year's Gordon Bourne bursaries and hear their enthusiasm for their future in midwifery. On behalf of the Trustees I wish them all well.
