President Professor Sir Paul Curran and Students’ Union President Kristina Perelygina signed a document on behalf of City, University of London committing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals were established by world leaders to create a better world, end poverty, fight inequality and take action on climate change. Supporting the goals are measurable targets to guide governments, businesses and society to work together to build a better, sustainable future for all.
This is an important step that demonstrates City’s commitment to sustainability and builds on our existing strength as the greenest university in London.
Sir Paul said: “I would like to thank many colleagues for bringing this initiative to fruition, in particular the Students’ Union Executive Committee and Board of Trustees and the enthusiastic PAF Sustainability Team,”
100% of City’s electricity comes from renewable energy sources and the University’s 43% carbon reduction target has already been met ahead of the 2020 deadline.
Times Higher Education (THE) launched the first University Impact Rankings (UIR) in November 2018, for which City was ranked 10th in the world from 229 institutions for Goal 12 (Responsible consumption and production).
Earlier this year, the University hosted the very first London Student Sustainability Conference that saw 70 students, academics, professionals and members of the public gather to discuss student research. As well as City, presenters attended from The Centre for Food Policy, The London School of Economics and Goldsmiths, University of London.
Staff across the University are encouraged to get involved with initiatives such as the Sustainable City Challenge. Unique projects that are part of sustainability activity and involve the City community include beekeeping, gardening and foodbank collections.
