Governor of Tokyo visits City
Last week, City, University of London, hosted senior representatives from Japan.
The visit follows City’s participation in the Lord Mayor of London’s visit to Tokyo in July, during which City signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Tokyo Metropolitan University (TMU).
As part of their visit, Yuriko Koike, the first female Governor of Tokyo and Dr. Haruo Shimada, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees at Tokyo Metropolitan University addressed an audience of over 300 City staff and students, as well as external visitors.
Governor Koike outlined her vision for a safe, diverse and smart city as she prepares Tokyo to host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
She emphasised the importance of collaboration between Tokyo and London in business and commerce and her ambitious plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
She also reflected on her career, starting as a graduate of University of Cairo and roles as an Arabic interpreter and news anchor prior to her move into politics. She held several ministerial positions, including Minister of the Environment and for Defence, before she became Governor.
Dr. Haruo Shimada spoke about the history of Tokyo as it celebrates the 150th anniversary of taking its modern name, and the importance of co-operation between Japan and the UK, particularly in light of Brexit.
Professor Sir Paul Curran, President of City, University of London, commented:
The visit of Governor Koike and Dr Shimada was much appreciated by both City and Tokyo Metropolitan University. It was a further example of the strengthening link between the great global cities of London and Tokyo.
Reflecting on the visit Vice President (International), Professor Stanton Newman said:
We were delighted to welcome Governor Koike and Dr. Shimada to City. In addition to their enlightening talks we held productive discussions about further collaboration between TMU and City, with an initial focus on Cass Business School.
The event was part of City’s Global Talks programme, an ongoing series of talks that aim to provide students and staff with an opportunity to gain global insights and perspectives from inspiring people from around the world.
