City student becomes first optometrist in UK to obtain Contact Lens Practice qualification
Avnish Rainath Rosunee becomes the first optometrist in the UK to pass the Professional Higher Certificate in Contact Lens Practice
City, University of London student Avnish Rainath Rosunee has become the first optometrist to pass the Professional Higher Certificate in Contact Lens Practice.
The higher professional certificate is awarded by the College of Optometrists, and currently can only be studied at three institutions nationally, including City. Having passed the exam, Avnish - who also completed an MSc in Clinical Optometry at City - is now the first person eligible to use the affix Higher Cert CL in the UK.
The qualification builds on the baseline knowledge and skills of contact lens practice of qualified optometrists, and covers a range of topics including an ability to detect, assess and manage the impact of contact lens complications on the eye. The course is led at City by Drs Byki Huntjens and Manbir Nagra.
Speaking about the award, module leader Dr Huntjens, said:
“We’re incredibly proud of Avnish and his achievement. Since 2015, we ran this course twice and Avnish is the first optometrist to complete the portfolio and viva voce following successful completion of the OSCEs and written exam. We are delighted to offer the Professional Higher Certificate in Contact Lens Practice course at City, and look forward to welcoming practitioners who wish to improve their contact lens knowledge, clinical skills, and confidence.”
