Videos reveal the work going on within the Division of Optometry and Visual Science at City.

A series of videos about the Crabb Lab by Optometry Today have highlighted the diverse range of researchers and interests present within the group in the School of Health Sciences.

The videos highlight how the research in the lab focuses on several connecting themes including imaging; measuring visual function and impact of eye disease on the patient; and assessing health service delivery in NHS eye clinics. Example research projects include:

  • Glaucoma in Perspective app – the app, which was supported by Allergan pharmaceuticals, aims to raise awareness of glaucoma and explains why people have no symptoms in the early stages of the disease
  • The ‘Big Red Button’ test – the project is looking at dry age-related macular degeneration and how it affects people’s mobility and day-to-day lives.
  • Crabb Lab Mapping Tool – an interactive mapping tool which shows the relationship between late diagnosis of eye disease and a patient’s socioeconomic status
  • Eye tracking – a series of projects using state-of-the-art eye tracking to map people’s eye movements This work might lead to tests for eye disease
  • Interpreting ‘Big data’ from eye clinics – the team are looking at different methods to help visualise routinely collected clinical data with the hope of developing tools that clinicians can use to help manage patients

Speaking in the video, David Crabb, Professor of Statistics and Vision Research in the School of Health Sciences, said:

“Our lab is in an optometry department but we have a mixture of researchers with very different backgrounds, so as well as optometrists we also have computer scientists, mathematicians, psychologists, and a health economist as well. This means that we're interested in a variety of topics which fall under the broad umbrella of measurement techniques in vision.

“What we always try to do with our research is to translate it into something that clinicians can use. While it is a difficult process, when you see a research idea turn into something of practical use it can be very satisfying from a personal point of view.”

The videos help to demonstrate how the Division of Optometry and Visual Science in the School of Health Science at City University London is a leading player in national and international vision research.
