Sustainable City Week
Seventh annual ‘green week’ sees City host a variety of events aimed at encouraging staff and students to learn more about sustainability
A Great City Bake-Off, edible critters and a cycle-powered cinema are just some of the activities on the menu for this year’s Sustainable City Week. Running from the 19th –
23rd October, the seventh annual ‘green week’ sees City host a variety of events aimed at encouraging staff and students to learn more about sustainability and discover some of the initiatives happening at the University.
On Tuesday 20th October, Cycle Cinema returns for the third year, where guests use pedal-power to generate electricity for the film’s screen and sound. In a nod to Halloween, this year’s film is the 2004 cult classic, Shaun of the Dead. Entry is free and a variety of refreshments will be available for attendees. Fancy dress encouraged. Register now.
The future of food can be sampled on Thursday 22nd October on the Level 1 Walkway (12:00 – 14:00), alongside information on how insects might meet the food production needs for an ever-growing population. ‘Tasty’ morsels of crispy critters will be available to try.
Those with a sweeter tooth and inspired by this week’s Great British Bake Off finale can get their own slice of the action on Friday 23rd October. Participants in the Great City Bake-Off will need to include at least one sustainable ingredient in their bake. This could be something free-range, organic, fair trade or locally sourced.
There will be a sweet and savoury category, so whether it’s cakes or bread, tortes or pretzels, be creative and get baking. Please bring your bakes into CityBar between 12:00 and 13:30 on Friday 23rd October. Judging will start at 14:00, with the prize of an Afternoon Tea River Thames Cruise for two people for the overall winner.
