City student entrepreneur finds success at Institute of Directors Awards

Popcord co-founder celebrated for his directorial business skills

City University London student entrepreneur Frank Milani has been celebrated by the Institute of Directors (IoD) for his work developing the portable mobile phone charger Popcord.

Frank was honoured at the recent IoD Awards receiving the Student Member of the Year Award, which recognises directorial qualities in student leadership.

The award is a prestigious honour, as winners are recognised as the best in their field by the UK's longest running organisation for business leaders.

Frank co-founded Popcord while studying for a Masters in Innovation, Creativity and Leadership (MICL) at City. The small light-weight device allows users to charge their mobiles on the go and can be attached to a key ring or laptop bag.

Frank commented "I am delighted to have been selected by the IoD to receive their Student Director of the Year award. It shows that the sleepless nights and the efforts of the team have made a huge impact in the last few months."

After a surge of interest in a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the project generated £47,000, well over twice the initial target, Frank and co-founder Matt Sandrini were able to put their idea into action.

They made the most of resources offered by City to support entrepreneurs in developing their start-up, getting advice from CityStarters, Start-Ed and The Hangout.

"All of us are thankful to the CityStarters team, without their guidance and support this wouldn't have been possible.' said Frank, 'A further thank you to City and Cass Business School that have managed to create an inspiring and encouraging environment for students that want to make a difference and stand out with their own ideas."

Ben Mumby-Croft, Enterprise Education Manager at City, said "This award is well deserved and testament to Frank's hard work and commitment over the last year; particularly given the fact he's been balancing the new business alongside his studies at City. Frank is exactly the kind of enterprising, go-getting student we see at City and is a fantastic role model for aspiring entrepreneurs from across the University"

The Popcord team were also sucessful earlier this year at CitySpark', the University's annual business plan competition where they were one of 5 student start-ups to win £3,000 and places on the CitySpark FFWD Summer Accelerator.

They are currently looking for advisors and mentors for the start-up in different areas of business including retail, sales and distribution.
