Alan Simpson, Professor of Collaborative Mental Health Nursing at City University London, has won the Eileen Skellern Lifetime Achievement Award for his sustained career contribution in the field of mental health nursing.

The award, which is sponsored by the Journal of Psychiatric & Mental Health Nursing (JPMHN), will be presented at an event to be held at City University in June 2013. The Skellern Lecture and Lifetime Achievement Award are presented together and have become an important annual event within the mental health care community.

Nominations are received from colleagues and a short list is presented to a panel made up of previous lecturers, award recipients, representatives of the sponsor organisations and is announced at the annual conference dinner of the NPNR Conference.

Eileen Skellern was one of the great innovators in mental health nursing and made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of this field. She played a leading role in developing the knowledge, skills and professional contribution of nurses. One of her last contributions was the planning of the First International Psychiatric Nursing Congress in 1980.
