The CitAI Artificial Intelligence Research Centre re-launches within the new institution.

By Dr Shamim Quadir (Senior Communications Officer), Published

With the newly instituted City St George’s, University of London, CitAI, the Artificial Intelligence Research Centre of the former City, University of London, has relaunched as the broader CitAI City St George’s.

On Monday 15 October, the Centre held its first meeting, with representatives from academic disciplines from the former City, University of London and St George’s, University of London, respectively.

It was chaired by Professor Eduardo Alonso, Director of CitAI City St George’s.

As a general-purpose technology, AI comes with both great opportunities and important challenges which City St George’s is uniquely positioned to benefit from and help tackle.

The creation of City St George’s helps the Centre position the University as a UK leader in the area. CitAI City St George’s serves as the University’s AI Hub with the following main objectives:

  • Offer a structure to bridge barriers across schools in the development of responsible AI
  • Channel and boost our research in AI as an institution
  • Make City St George’s AI research visible
  • Promote interdisciplinary collaboration in AI-related research, between scientists, technologists, and clinicians with an emphasis on impact, policy and legal and socio-economic issues
  • Establish a national network in collaboration with the Alan Turing Institute and industrial partners
  • Be instrumental in facilitating an environment for the preparation of REF Units of Assessment (UoAs)
  • Foster City St George’s vision and strategy in coordination with the SLT

Reflecting on the inaugural meeting, Professor Alonso said:

At this meeting, we established a structure and communication channels to coordinate our efforts, with the agenda of identifying and managing research opportunities that will generate funding, outputs and impact cases.

We were able to agree on our first steps together, namely to compile a list of colleagues interested in AI across all schools of the University and to extend our seminar series and organise dedicated workshops taking into account trans-disciplinarity and the transformative character of AI.

We also agreed that we will appoint an External Advisory Board, update the CitAI St George’s webpage and create dissemination media to raise its profile, co-ordinate with the Research & Enterprise Team at the University and to write a white paper on AI at City St George’s.
