As the first English university to join BritCham, City St George’s will work collaboratively with institutions in Vietnam.

City St George's, University of London is the first university in England to join the British Chamber of Commerce (BritCham) in Vietnam, marking a significant milestone in its commitment to fostering international education and collaboration.

The Rector of City St George's, University of London is The Lord Mayor of London and is appointed each year in November. While Michael Mainelli was in office, he made a historic visit to Vietnam.

Building on the previous Lord Mayor’s trip, a delegation from City St George's visited the British University Vietnam (BUV) in Hanoi to develop on the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with BUV and the Centre for Foreign Affairs and Language Training (CEFALT).

This partnership aims to explore innovative ways to support the Vietnamese government's agenda on international education.

According to the agreement, the three institutions will collaborate on several key areas from 2024-29. These include:

  • Strengthening the strategic partnership between City St George’s and BUV to provide another quality education link between Vietnam and the UK
  • Implementing student exchange programmes
  • Establishing and offering international collaborative training opportunities
  • Attracting funding for research to foster innovation and create impact

The delegation comprised Dr Sionade Robinson, Vice-President (Enterprise, Engagement & Employability), Professor Richard Ashcroft, Executive Dean for The City Law School, Dr Ambalika Batra-Penny, Head of Enterprise and Innovation, and Jane Wallis, Global Partnerships Manager.

The university's membership in BritCham will enhance City St George's efforts to work collaboratively with institutions in Vietnam, supporting mutual ambitions in the educational sector.

The visit also included high-level meetings in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City with the Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy, the British Consul and the Head of Trade.

The delegation was also invited to a celebration of the King's birthday in Ho Chi Minh City, an event that brought together businesses, professional bodies and key government officials from both the UK and Vietnam.

Dr Robinson attended the signing of the MoU in Ho Chi Minh City. She said British University Vietnam shares the ambition of City St George’s to bring world-class knowledge and education to students.
