A new bursary will support a student for each of the next two years on the upcoming Podcasting MA programme, which will start at City, University of London from September 2023.

Change Makers, a programme funded by Goalhanger Podcasts, the UK’s largest podcast producer, will provide a £5,000 bursary for one student for each of the next two years from underrepresented backgrounds to help with study and living costs for the new postgraduate course.

The Podcasting MA at City launched earlier this year in response to industry demand for highly-trained creatives in a fast-growing sector in UK media. The programme will develop students’ production and editing skills, as well as important media and business development techniques such as monetisation, advertising and branding of a podcast.

The new MA will run alongside the Centre of Podcasting Excellence at City, that will hold monthly events about podcasting as well as hosting guest speakers, short courses and journalists in residence.

To be eligible to receive the bursary, applicants must hold an unconditional offer for the Podcasting MA programme at City for the 2023/24 academic year along with holding home fee status, and submit a 600-word essay outlining why they wish to pursue a career in podcasting which also outlines their financial need.

Essays should be sent to the School of Communication & Creativity’s admissions team by 4pm on Friday 30 June 2023, with the successful applicant being notified in early July.

Brett Spencer, Director of the Centre for Podcasting Excellence at City, said:

“Podcasting is a thriving industry that has gathered a lot of pace in recent years.

“The Podcasting MA will give aspiring creators unrivalled access to the tools they need to succeed, not just in terms of producing sharp content but running it as a successful business operation.

“We are very grateful for the support from Goalhanger and the Change Makers bursary, which will make a significant difference to two students’ podcasting journeys.”

Jack Davenport, Managing Director at Goalhanger Podcasts, said:

“The art of effective podcasting requires skills in creation, production, marketing and execution, which naturally lend themselves to a taught degree programme.

“We are delighted to be supporting two students on the new Podcasting MA programme who would not otherwise have the opportunity to study a postgraduate degree, and look forward to working with City’s Centre for Podcasting Excellence to help kickstart the careers of aspiring podcasters.”
