Academics, practitioners and industry experts assembled at Bayes Business School (formerly Cass) for the 2022 International Workshop on Financial Systems Architecture and Stability (IWFSAS), hosted by the Business School’s Centre for Banking Research.

The biannual event, returning in person for the first time since 2018, focussed on how recent paradigm shifts are changing the face of risk management for businesses and banks.

The two-day conference, organised in partnership with the Euro-Mediterranean Economists Association (EMEA), and the Gustavson School of Business, University of Victoria, welcomed guest speakers from around Europe from fellow business schools and financial institutions.

Topics covered included the impact of rising Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) standards and sustainability development goals, changing lender behaviours and security of small banks’ credit subsidisation.

A keynote was delivered at the end of each day, with Alison Scott, Director, Bank of England addressing the risk, challenges and opportunities of paradigm shift – in particular relation to cryptocurrencies – in a talk titled ‘Look up’, and Professor Marcin Kacperczyk from Imperial College Business School discussing the management of transition risk as countries move towards Net Zero with his talk, ‘Decarbonisation’.

Professor Barbara Casu, Director of the Centre for Banking Research, said:

“The International Workshop on Financial Systems Architecture and Stability provides a forum for academics, policy makers and practitioners to discuss issues related to the structure and design of financial systems and their impact on sustainable economic development.

“As the world faces up to challenges of rebuilding from the global pandemic, war in Ukraine and the continued race to save the planet in the face of climate change, it is very clear that we are living through a seismic paradigm shift which brings its own uncertainty and risks which must be effectively managed.

“We were delighted to welcome so many excellent speakers for this year’s IWFSAS, and hope that the insights gained across the two days will galvanise impactful research and practice in this vital area.”
