Bayes Business School (formerly Cass) has launched the Boyle-Rodney Scholarship to widen access to its MSc postgraduate programmes.

Funded by James Boyle (MSc Real Estate Investment, 1997), a Bayes alumnus, the scholarship will financially support two students per year on Bayes MSc programmes.

The Boyle-Rodney Fund will contribute towards 50 per cent of tuition fees, with Bayes covering the remaining total. In addition, successful applicants will receive a £10,000 stipend to be paid in ten instalments across the year.

To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must satisfy the entry criteria for their chosen MSc programme at Bayes and be able to demonstrate financial need.

Applications are now open for the 2022/23 academic year.

Professor Lilian de Menezes, Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Bayes, said:

“The Boyle-Rodney Scholarship continues our work towards widening participation at Bayes, as we aim to build a more inclusive community.

“The fund will allow students, who may not otherwise have considered postgraduate study for financial reasons, to complete a globally-renowned master’s degree from our selection of MSc programmes.

“In addition to fees, a stipend will provide significant support for the costs of living and maintenance – allowing successful applicants to make the most of their studies without fear of financial burden.

“We are very pleased to be able to offer this opportunity, as we strive to change more than a name.”

Dr Simone Krummaker, Associate Director for MSc Programmes and Senior Lecturer in Insurance at Bayes, said:

“In a competitive job market, a master’s degree is an excellent way of standing out to prospective employers and developing vital exposure to key industries. A Bayes MSc gives students the chance to take learning beyond the classroom with a series of elective modules, allowing them to tailor their programme to specific interests and career aspirations.

“I am delighted that the Boyle-Rodney Scholarship will open up opportunities for more students to complete an MSc programme here at Bayes, and we look forward to welcoming applications for the 2022/23 academic year.”

The scholarship is named in recognition of Bill Rodney, Senior Lecturer in Valuation at Bayes, for the role he played in Mr Boyle’s postgraduate education. Mr Rodney said he was proud to give his name to the award:

“One of the many things that makes Bayes a special community is the lasting respect and affinity among tutors and alumni, and as a lecturer it is always pleasing to learn about the impact we’ve had on the lives of students.

“It is also very warming when highly talented and successful individuals like James decide to give back to the community in ways such as this.

“The scholarship will give students from less affluent backgrounds the opportunity to come to Bayes to further their study with a postgraduate degree, and it is a real honour that this award should be named after myself.

“I am really looking forward to meeting the first recipients of the scholarship and hope they are able to take full advantage of what a master’s degree at Bayes can offer.”

James Boyle,Co-founder and Director of Infrastructure Investments Limited, studied for his MSc in Property Investment at Bayes between 1994 and 1997.

Mr Boyle said:

“I hope this award will facilitate motivated individuals to overcome financial impediment to benefit from a life-changing post-graduate degree course at Bayes Business School.

“This award is also in recognition of Bill Rodney, a lead tutor on my MSc degree in Real Estate Investment. I and countless others are indebted to him and his Bayes Business School colleagues for helping to launch so many successful and rewarding careers in the connected fields of finance and real estate, and beyond. Long may this continue.”

Alex Moss, Director of the Real Estate Research Centre at Bayes, said:

“At Bayes we have a very long-established expertise in real estate, providing a dynamic link between the academic community and practitioners involved in real estate, particularly real estate finance. This scholarship recognises the vital role that Bill Rodney has played in developing the credibility of real estate at Bayes. We look forward to welcoming James back for guest lectures at Bayes and his ongoing participation in the activities of the School.”
