The School of Health Sciences Practice Excellence Awards recognise, celebrate and reward the achievements of our practice colleagues, who provide placements and support for our students to help them excel.

This year the awarding ceremony took place at Haberdasher’s Hall. In light of the inability to meet due to the pandemic last year, the ceremony included the issuing of awards for both the 2019-20 and 2020-21 academic years.

Practice Excellence Awards

Students nominate placements in Nursing, Midwifery, Radiography, and Speech and Language Therapy. These awards are an opportunity for us to thank our practice colleagues for their support and contribution to our student experience.

Supervisor* of the Year Awards

This award category was introduced to recognise the contribution of supervisors. Students were invited to nominate supervisors that have provided an outstanding level of support and contributed to their learning in practice.

*Supervisor is an umbrella term to include assessors and mentors etc. across the following divisions: Nursing, Midwifery, Radiography and Speech and Language Therapy.

Lamb Ward recipients of award from Judy Brook

Lamb Ward, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust awarded Highly Commended Placement of the Year (Nursing)

The ceremony was led by Judy Brook, Associate Dean, Partners and Placements who later reflected:

This was a fantastic opportunity to say thank you to our partners for all their work to support our students. There was real feeling of celebration; the venue was lovely, the sun came out, and it was a perfect opportunity to catch-up after the formal event.  It was especially nice to recognise the value our students feel partners add to our academic programmes, especially given the challenges in healthcare settings recently.

The ceremony closed with remarks from School of Health & Psychological Sciences Dean, Professor Debra Salmon. She also awarded the Anne McLeod Award to the School’s very own Dr Michelle Parker, Programme Director for the Adult Nursing.

Anne McLeod was a much-loved colleague of 17 years, who sadly passed away in June 2020. A Senior Lecturer in Critical Care and the Programme Director for Adult Nursing, Anne was immensely proud of the work undertaken by the Nursing Division at City.

Professor Salmon said in part about Anne and presentation of the award created in her memory:

"The Anne McLeod Award is an annual award, sponsored by Anne’s family, presented to an academic from the Division of Nursing in memory of Anne, and in recognition of the values Anne embodied so deeply.

"It is my great privilege to present this year’s award to Dr Michelle Parker.

“As our Programme Director for the Adult Nursing programme, Michelle played a key role in the development of simulated practice resources that were adopted across all nursing programmes to support students whose placements had been disrupted as a result of the pandemic. This work also enhanced relationships with practice partners, as she worked closely with them to address students’ clinical requirements."
