City, University of London is delighted to announce that its President, Professor Anthony Finkelstein, has been awarded a Knighthood in the New Year Honours, for Public Service.

City, University of London is delighted to announce that its President, Professor Anthony Finkelstein, has been awarded a Knighthood in the New Year Honours, for Public Service.

Professor Finkelstein joined City as its President in June 2021, having served as the Government’s Chief Scientific Adviser for National Security from 2015.

Anthony said:

“A great honour, clearly, and also … faintly ridiculous! Obviously, it is the outcome of work with a fantastic HM Government team: hard-working, brave, and imaginative. The real honour is the opportunity to work with them in the service of a mission I passionately believe in."

During his time working for the Government, Anthony’s research was based at The Alan Turing Institute and he held a Chair in Software Systems Engineering at University College London (UCL).  Anthony has also been Dean of the UCL Faculty of Engineering Sciences and Head of UCL Computer Science.

At City, Anthony is also a Professor of Software Systems Engineering within the School of Science & Technology. His scientific work is in the broad area of systems engineering.  He has active interests across computer science and in all aspects of the development of complex software systems. Anthony has a particular background in problems of national security and defence. He continues to have a strong interest in science and innovation policy and in government use of technology.

Anthony is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. He is also a Member of Academia Europaea, a Fellow of City & Guilds of London Institute and a Distinguished Fellow of RUSI (the Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies). He has an Honorary DSc from City, University of London. He was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to computer science and engineering.
