Professor John is a leading Dickensian and Victorian scholar and author of several influential books on the relationship between Dickens and popular culture, both Victorian and contemporary.

She works closely with the Charles Dickens Museum, where she is an academic advisor and has working connections with the Museum of London.

Prior to her move to London, Juliet was Faculty Director of Student Experience for the Faculty Humanities & Social Sciences and founder and Director of the inter-institutional Gladstone Centre for Victorian Studies at Liverpool.

I am very excited and proud to be joining City, a University with a rich history and historic commitment to excellence and inclusivity in education and research.

City’s institutional ambition and vision is evident in the School of Arts & Social Sciences, home to a dynamic range of departments and academics, and a student community whose diversity exemplifies all that higher education should aspire to.

As a Dickensian and Victorianist by academic background, whose research focuses on culture as socially transformative and on Dickens’s resonant vision of London, I couldn’t ask for more than a shaping role at a progressive and unique institution like City.
