The Department of Journalism at City, University of London will be among the hosts of the 23rd Congress of the Worldwide Association of Women Journalists and Writers (AMMPE).
Around 250 delegates from across the world will visit the university on the second day of the four-day congress, on Wednesday 7th November 2018.
Dorothy Byrne, Head of News and Current Affairs at Channel 4 and Chair of the Ethical Journalism Network, will be among the speakers at City.
The award-winning author Elif Shafak will give the keynote address at the BBC's central London headquarters on the first day of the congress, which is being held in the UK for the first time and is free to attend.
Dr Zahera Harb (right), a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Journalism at City and a member of the AMMPE congress organising committee, said: “We are so pleased to play a part in hosting and organising this event.
“City’s journalism department has long been committed to offering a space for debating journalism issues and to advocating good journalism practices nationally and internationally.
“The congress is a good opportunity to engage with journalists, writers and academics from around the world in critically assessing our roles in contributing to the wellbeing of our societies.”
Speakers
In her keynote speech, Elif Shafak will explore the theme “telling the whole story: a complex world needs all its story tellers”.
She will join a line-up of more than 100 internationally acclaimed speakers who will address delegates in presentations and panel discussions at the BBC, City, Google's UK headquarters and the University of Kent's Medway campus.

Professor Sir Paul Curran, City's President, will open the City event with a welcoming address.
The line-up for the four-day event also includes: leading women’s rights campaigner Helen Pankhurst; academy-award winning screenwriter Gonzalo Maza; Chilean journalist turned successful politician Beatrice Sanchez; award-winning Mexican journalist Annabel Hernandez and prominent US radio host and podcaster Kelly McEvers.
About AMMPE
The Worldwide Association of Women Journalists and Writers is a not-for-profit organisation which was established by the Mexican writer Gloria Salas de Calderon in 1969. AMMPE describes itself as a loose association of women journalists and writers groups from around the world.
The 2018 congress has been organised by a committee from across the media, civil society and academia.
