The City St George's Research Radiographer Group (CRRA3G) at the School of Health and Psychological Sciences, City St. George's, University of London welcomes Associate Professor Adam Lewandowski to provide an overview of UK Biobank, updates on ongoing projects, future planned enhancements to the resource, as well as how to access the data for conducting health-related research, as part of the research seminar series.
Abstract
UK Biobank is a large-scale biomedical database and research resource established to improve understanding of diseases and advance preventative healthcare. Between 2006-2010, 500,000 participants aged 40-69 years old from around the UK were recruited to take part in UK Biobank.
At the time of recruitment, participants provided biological samples, lifestyle information, underwent physiological assessments, and provided consent to access their health records and to be followed up for future assessments.
This vast resource enables research into a broad range of diseases, including cardiovascular, cancer, neurological, and metabolic conditions.
Major enhancements have expanded its utility significantly, including the world’s largest multi-organ imaging program, which captures detailed MRI scans of the brain, heart, liver and abdomen, as well as full-body dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans and carotid ultrasounds from over 100,000 UK Biobank participants, providing insights into anatomical and physiological changes linked to health outcomes.
In 2023, the repeat imaging study was launched, which aims to bring back 60,000 of the 100,000 participants for the same imaging assessments over the next five years.
This talk will provide an overview of UK Biobank, updates on ongoing projects, future planned enhancements to the resource, as well as how to access the data for conducting health-related research.
About the speaker
Adam Lewandowski is the Deputy Chief Scientist for UK Biobank and an Associate Professor of Cardiovascular Science in the Nuffield Department of Population Health at the University of Oxford.
He completed his undergraduate studies in Biological Sciences at the University of Guelph in Canada, his master’s degree in Healthcare Data Informatics at the University of Cambridge, and his DPhil in Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Oxford.
After completing his DPhil in 2013, Adam was a postdoc researcher in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Oxford and was subsequently awarded a British Heart Foundation Intermediate Basic Science Research Fellowship.
His research interests are primarily in using multi-modality, deep phenotyping approaches to identify early cardiac and vascular changes in people at risk of later cardiovascular disease.
Adam joined the UK Biobank scientific team in April 2024, where he is responsible for developing the scientific strategy for future enhancements to the resource.
