Professor Rosie Meek will deliver The Portal Trust Education Lecture 2022 hosted at Bayes Business School, to consider ‘The importance of sport and physical activity in supporting education and rehabilitation in our prisons’.
Professor Rosie Meek
Professor Rosie Meek is a Chartered Psychologist and was founding Head of the Law School at Royal Holloway University of London, where her teaching and research expertise is in Criminal Justice and in particular, prisons. As well as researching and writing widely on the role of the voluntary sector in prisoner rehabilitation, Professor Meek is best known for her work on the role and impact of sport and physical activity in prison settings: in addition to chapters, journal articles and evaluation reports on the topic, her book 'Sport in Prison' (Routledge) was published in 2013, and in 2018 she conducted a national review of the provision of physical activity in youth and adult prisons, on behalf of the Ministry of Justice, which led to a number of policy changes.
In her address, Professor Meek will give an overview of the research she has undertaken in this area over the last 15 years. In particular she will focus on the role of sport and physical activity in promoting education and employability in youth prisons. She will illustrate her talk with examples drawn from some of the prison and community partnerships she has developed and evaluated.
The Portal Trust
The Portal Trust, are a grant making charity providing funds to individuals and organisations to further the education of young people from inner London. We are a small team of nine staff, 12 Trustees and a number of advisors and ambassadors who work together to make a meaningful education available to all.
We were originally founded in 1748, and along the way have become the trustee for two schools (The Aldgate School and Stepney All Saints CE Secondary School), created and supported two Technical Institutes, a Nautical College and an affordable student Hall of Residence. We've also provided major grants to set up new departments and widen access at several of London's universities, most recently at London College of Fashion, UAL
Each year we bring our friends – old and new - and partners together for a lecture, kindly hosted in the auditorium at the Bayes Business School, to explore an important topic of the day, before a relaxed drinks and canapés reception.
